So this is why Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One has broken the internet…

Another Mission: Impossible movie? For summer? Ground-breaking.

Get this, though: the summer blockbuster to end all summer blockbusters isn’t just getting five star reviews all over the shop, it genuinely has proven itself to be a ground-breaking film.

Don’t believe us? Well, the current Rotten Tomatoes score for Dead Reckoning Part One is sitting pretty at 98%, thus making the franchise one of the most acclaimed of all time. Ever.

Watch the trailer for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One below:

Once again starring Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, the film sees the actor showcase some of his most death-defying stunts to date (the motorbike! Off the cliff! No stunt double!) and score himself his own personal highest Rotten Tomatoes score to date in the process.

Here’s what you need to know about the film.

What is Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One about?

As the title makes all too clear, this film sees Ethan and his team tasked with a seemingly impossible mission. Again. This time, they have to embark on a deadly race around the world to *checks notes* track down a terrifying new AI weapon that threatens all of humanity. It’s high stakes stuff, and things become all the more intense when dark forces from Ethan’s past begin to close in.

Will our hero sacrifice everything – even the people he loves most – to keep the WMD from falling into the wrong hands?

Well, as this is the first chapter in a two-part story, I suspect we have a wee while to wait before we find out…

Who stars in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One?

Whether you love him, loathe him or even fear him a little, there’s no denying that Cruise (aka Hollywood’s most bankable actor) gives excellent value for money in his role as Ethan Hunt.

He’s joined by Pom Klementieff, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, and Hayley Atwell, who joins the franchise as a double-crossing thief.

“Grace, I would say, is consistently inconsistent,” she tells ScreenRant of her character. “A lone wolf. She’s hyper-vigilant. She’s out for herself out of necessity; because she’s had to be. It’s how she’s survived. She’s learned skills on the job, as opposed to having had any real formal training, which means she can be quite scrappy and can also duck and dive and adapt to situations.”

Atwell continues: “And, of course, that shares an origin story with Ethan Hunt who kind of has a similar background. They are sort of two sides of the same coin; there’s a kind of cat-and-mouse feel to them — like siblings in a way. And that creates a kind of exasperation between them that becomes also very endearing and very funny.”

Honestly, she positively oozes charisma. You’ll want to watch it at least twice for her performance alone.

What are people saying about Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One?

Aside from the glowing reviews, you mean? Well, director Christopher McQuarrie has promised that the film will explore Ethan’s past for the first time.

“Casting Esai [Morales as the antagonist] allowed us to explore things with those characters and the notion of Ethan’s past,” he tells Empire

“Ethan has a past that predates the IMF, and that allowed us to explore that with a character that knew Ethan before Ethan was Ethan. That’s part of who Gabriel is. Every detail of the story is very carefully considered. People who want to do their homework can derive from that name whatever they please.

When can we watch Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One?

The film will hit UK cinemas on 12 July.

Anyone else already booked their tickets? See you in the queue for popcorn, then!
