Huge news for Mamma Mia! fans: its producer Judy Craymer just revealed that she’s working on a third movie.
Dust off your Dancing Queen shoes and say Thank You For The Music: we could soon be returning to the island of Kalokairi for the long-awaited third instalment of the Mamma Mia! films.
Sharing the news fans have longed to hear, the film’s producer Judy Craymer this week told Variety that Mamma Mia! 3 “will happen”. Cue excited screams across the internet.
“I am so hands-on with everything that I can only do so much. So the TV show [talent show Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream] has been a big priority,” Craymer said.
“I’m sure [the third movie] will happen. I’m in the privileged position that I have Universal Studios wanting to do it, who I love working with, and I have a storyline.”
Craymer went on to say that the only people she needs backing from are Abba’s Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson. “It just always takes a certain amount of time with Mamma Mia! Bjorn and Benny always take a certain amount of convincing,” she admitted.
“I don’t know how much more convincing they’re gonna have because everybody wants another film. But they had Abba Voyage and then they wanted a rest from Abba stuff…But it will happen. We’ve done the television show and now maybe I’ll focus on the movie. Maybe that’ll be a second 25-year celebration,” she added.

It’s not just Craymer who seems keen for audiences to return to Hotel Donna. Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård and other key Mamma Mia! cast members have expressed their eagerness for a second sequel to the 2008 film.
Despite the death of her character, Donna Sheridan, Streep told Vogue earlier this year: “I’m up for anything. I’ll have to schedule a knee scoping before we film, but if there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there. I told [Craymer] if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died.”
So while we may still have to wait for the official green light, there’s still plenty to get excited about. Watch this space, indeed.
