From Jodie Comer’s nail-biting survival drama The End We Start From to Jenna Coleman’s BBC series The Jetty, 2024 is already shaping up to be an exciting year for female-led thrillers. So if you’re in the market for a pulse-raising watch for the new year, there’s another project that should be on your radar: Love Lies Bleeding, the gritty A24 revenge thriller starring Kristen Stewart.

Billed as an “off-the-wall, rambunctious lesbian love story” set in a suburban small town that has a “heightened Americana sensibility”, Stewart will play a gym employee who becomes romantically entangled with a bisexual bodybuilder, who is also at the centre of a criminal empire. 

As the official synopsis reads: “Reclusive gym manager Lou (Stewart) falls hard for Jackie (Katy O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Vegas in pursuit of her dream. But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.”

Directed by Rose Glass, the mastermind behind acclaimed 2019 psychological horror Saint Maud, the film also stars Jena Malone, Dave Franco and Ed Harris as Lou’s father. 

As for a release date, Love Lies Bleeding is set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, with an official release planned for spring 2024. Watch this space.
