Jennifer Lopez is a data analyst fighting a renegade robot in her latest on-screen adventure. Here’s what we know about Atlas…
The robots are coming…. and there’s an unlikely hero in the battle against AI: Jennifer Lopez.
No, you’re not in the middle of a late-night cheese fondue fever dream. After fighting to save her daughter in Alaska in Mother, Jennifer Lopez is back in action thriller mode. And this time she’s headed to space.
Atlas, directed by Brad Peyton, sees the multi-hyphenated performer as the only hope for human survival as she sets out to defeat enemy forces in a high-tech and futuristic world. And if J.Lo can’t save the world, we’re not sure who can…
Here’s what we know about Atlas so far.
What is Atlas about?
“Can you hear me?”
A question you never want to be asking when you’re in orbit trying to defeat an old enemy. But that’s the situation government analyst Atlas Shepherd (Lopez) finds herself in at the end of the high-octane trailer for Atlas, and she doesn’t sound thrilled about it either.
She’s on the hunt for Harlan, an intergalactic terrorist, who murdered her family during an attack on her agency’s headquarters and is currently hiding on a remote planet. But when missiles strike her spaceship, she has to evacuate in an AI-driven mechanical armoured suit (we have no idea what that is either) to complete her mission.
“The film follows Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, who joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past,” says the Netflix synopsis. “But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.”
Who is in Atlas?
Lopez is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Simu Liu (Barbie), Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us, American Fiction), Gregory J. Cohan (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty), Abraham Popoola (Andor), Lana Parrilla (The Lincoln Lawyer) and Mark Strong (Kingsman: The Secret Service).
When can I watch Atlas?
Atlas will be released globally on Netflix on 24 May. Until then you can keep hitting refresh on the trailer below…
