In the mood for a classic teenage romcom? You’ll want to add How To Date Billy Walsh to your watch list.

We’re always happy to see a great romcom, especially as they’ve become something of a rarity in recent years. Sure, we can find time for yet another 10 Things I Hate About You rewatch… but then what? We’ve got to get some fresh recruits in, which is why we’re so pleased to learn that a new option for romcom night is hitting our screens next month.

How To Date Billy Walsh is a British answer to the classic teenage romantic comedy, with all those archetypal themes of secretly being in love with a best friend, having a crush on a transfer student and madcap attempts to sort things out that only make them much, much worse.

So, here’s everything to know about the Prime Video film, including when we can expect the romcom to land on our screens.

What is How To Date Billy Walsh about?

OK, so you’ve got two teenagers, Amelia (Charithra Chandran) and Archie (Sebastian Croft), who have been best friends since they were kids. Except here’s the big secret: Archie has been secretly in love with Amelia the whole time.

Just as he’s working up to declaring his feelings, a new transfer student from America arrives, named Billy Walsh (Tanner Buchanan). Amelia immediately develops a crush, and Archie is, well… crushed. He starts carrying out all sorts of misguided schemes to try to keep Amelia and Billy apart, which only ends up pushing them closer together (while he runs the risk of losing his best friend as a result).

Who stars in How To Date Billy Walsh?

Charithra Chandran, who you’ll remember as the excellent Edwina Sharma in Bridgerton, takes the lead as Amelia, who she described as “Edwina’s polar opposite”. “Amelia is boisterous, loud, ungraceful and a bit of a menace,” Chandran told Porter.

Starring opposite as Amelia’s best friend, Archie, is Sebastian Croft, who made his name in Heartstopper, while Tanner Buchanan of Cobra Kai and He’s All That plays the eponymous Billy Walsh.

Also popping up in the film are Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory), Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz), Guz Khan (Army Of Thieves), Lucy Punch (Motherland) and newcomer Daisy Jelley.

What are people saying about How To Date Billy Walsh?

Chandran has promised that How To Date Billy Walsh is “the kind of timeless romcom that you can watch on a rainy day and it feels like a hug”, which sounds very much up our street. “I’m looking forward to being in a movie where people are going to laugh a lot,” she added, describing it as “a film that everyone can come together and enjoy”.

Meanwhile, Matt Williams, producer and CEO of Future Artists Entertainment, said: “How To Date Billy Walsh is such an exciting film to be making with Prime Video. This is an opportunity to create a new instalment in the high school romcom genre but completely refresh it with a unique British sense of humour, and it’s elevated by the amazing team we’ve managed to gather both in front and behind the camera.”
