Described as a “relationship thriller” by Netflix, Fair Play is about a young couple attempting to navigate both their workplace and their relationship. Here’s everything you need to know.
Workplace drama can be stressful enough, but what happens when you throw in a secret relationship with a colleague in a high-stakes work environment? Well, we’re about to find out in Phoebe Dynevor’s latest thriller, Fair Play. The film, acquired by Netflix after it premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, follows the story of a young couple navigating their shared workplace at a hedge fund, which is set to become even harder on their relationship after one of them is promoted over the other.
The newly released trailer is already packed with edge-of-your-seat emotions, so we have high hopes for when the film is released later this year. And so, here’s everything we know so far about Fair Play, including when we can expect to watch it on Netflix.
What is the plot of Fair Play?
The film will focus on a newly engaged couple, Luke and Emily, as they attempt to navigate working at the same high-stakes hedge fund while keeping their relationship a secret from their employer. But when Emily is promoted over Luke, their relationship is pushed to the very brink, “threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement”, the synopsis reads.
Speaking to Vanity Fair about Fair Play, writer and director Chloe Domont said: “The thing about this film is that no one person is going to walk out of this movie feeling the same way as someone else. I’m here to slap people in the face, strangle them a little bit, choke them out… I’m excited to open it up because I think it’ll stir even more conversation and debate.”
Domont previously shared with Netflix why she wanted to tell this particular story. “I wanted to reckon with some unresolved feelings I had in the past, specifically dating men who I felt were threatened by either my ambition or any little bits of accomplishments.” She also wants this film to highlight that these “dynamics should no longer be normalised”.
Who will star in Fair Play?
Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) will star as Emily and Alden Ehrenreich (Oppenheimer) as Luke. Eddie Marsan and Rich Sommer also feature in the cast as two of their co-workers at the hedge fund, with Marsan playing the young couple’s boss.
Fair Play will be written and directed by Domont, who will be making her feature film debut with this project. While this may be her first film, Domont has already directed multiple episodes of Suits and is best known for her work on USA’s Shooter, HBO’s Ballers and Star Trek: Discovery.
When will Fair Play be released?
This film is one for your autumn watch list. Fair Play will first release in select UK cinemas on Friday 6 October and then on Netflix a week later, on Friday 13 October.
