Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez take the lead in Emilia Pérez, a tale of a mob boss’s secret new life as a woman…

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: 2024 is the year of the musical. With Wicked set to soar into cinemas later this month, Lost Boys And Fairies still being lauded as one of the BBC’s hottest titles and Pharrell Williams’s musical Lego biopic garnering a lot of headlines right now, it’s a genre that feels more exciting than ever – especially when you factor in Netflix’s newest title.

Emilia Pérez is already generating Oscars buzz, with many predicting that the audacious film will get a slew of nominations (including one for the first openly trans actor of any gender to be nominated for an Academy Award). So, yes, you’d best make a note of its release date so you can find out what all the fuss is about…

And just like that, our toes are tapping. Here’s what you need to know about Emilia Pérez

What’s the plot of Emilia Pérez?

Promising to be a story of rebirth, the official synopsis for Emilia Pérez explains that the film “follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The fearsome cartel leader Emilia enlists Rita, an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self.”

Who stars in Emilia Pérez?

The double Cannes-winning film boasts a stellar cast, including Karla Sofía Gascón as the titular Emilia, Zoe Saldaña as Rita, and Selena Gomez as Emilia’s wife, Jessi.

Adriana Paz and Édgar Ramírez also star.

What are people saying about Emilia Pérez?

Dubbing the film “an action movie that’s not an action movie, a drama that’s not a drama, a comedy that’s not a comedy” Gascón has branded the film “a great gift”.

“I’m so proud to be part of it,” she tells Netflix’s Tudum

“It’s a dream role that is hard to find because it has so much depth, so much richness. And for an actor to get into it, it needs a lot of dedication, and a lot of work because you have two voices that also sing with a Mexican accent. It is so huge.”

When can we watch Emilia Pérez?

The film will become available for streaming on 13 November.
