We may not be strangers to film adaptations of books or plays, but did you ever think Cate Blanchett would star as a video game character?

And yet, here she is. The Academy Award and Bafta award winner will star in Borderlands, a Hollywood take on the beloved adventure video game series.

Director Eli Roth describes being inspired to cast her after seeing her award-winning performance in acclaimed film Tár, where she plays a conductor accused of misconduct. “People love seeing you with a conductor stick, and I’m going to throw a flame thrower in her hand,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Cate admitted to Empire that playing a gun-slinger was “so much fun” and she got really into the game as part of her preparation. “I wanted to know the limits of the game and what fans loved about the character. I got really absorbed in that whole world.”

Borderlands was made by the producers behind Spider-Man and Venom and underwent reshoots by Deadpool filmmaker Tim Miller. So could it be something of a slapstick superhero movie?
