Because you felt that you hadn’t done something you should have?

Yeah, I felt like I hadn’t done anything, and the pandemic didn’t help. I was 28 when it started and had to move out of New York where I’d built my whole life since I was 18 [Hewson studied at NYU]. Then I was living in London and I just felt very stuck. I’m one of those people that constantly feels like they haven’t done enough, and that they’re not good enough. I’m never satisfied.

Is that a female perfectionist thing or something inherent?

I think it’s the timeline that we are stuck to as women. It’s been so imprinted on me that at a certain point I’m gonna have kids and at a certain point I’m gonna have to find the person who’s gonna father my kids, so do I have to have success before all of that happens? Am I going to be able to accept success while that happens? Emotionally and psychologically I’ve never felt better, but it’s society’s pressure that I’ve been brainwashed by my entire life; that all of a sudden you feel like if you don’t have it all, you’re a failure. So that kind of freaked me out.

And how are you feeling at 33?

I feel fucking great. Once you’ve hit it and you’re past it you’re like, that’s not a big deal. [I’m enjoying my 30s] way better than any other period of my life.

Why do you think that is?

I care way less. I’m tired more [laughs]. There’s less time for me to make bad decisions. I’m at home in bed rather than out doing god knows what. I don’t do anything else [except work] but I like it more. I much prefer to work than to be sitting around.
