Anne Hathaway says she was told her career would ‘fall off a cliff’ by 35

She was told her career would be over by 35, but Anne Hathaway says she’s never let that get in the way of her ambitions.

As an Academy Award-winner and the much-loved star of The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada and Interstellar, it’s hard to believe that Anne Hathaway could be thought of as anything other than entertainment royalty.

But in a recent interview with Porter, the actor recalled that when she first started out in Hollywood, she was told that her career wouldn’t last. “I was warned that my career would fall off a cliff at the age of 35, which is something I know a lot of women face,” she explained.

In an industry where ageism, particularly towards women, remains rife, it’s saddening but not surprising. Halle Berry is constantly standing up to age-shamers online, while Naomi Watts has gone public about being told she needed to achieve as much as possible in her acting career before becoming “unfuckable” over the age of 40.

However, as 41-year-old Hathaway pointed out, an increasing number of women in the industry are now (thankfully) enjoying longer careers than in the past.

“The thing that has evolved during (that time) is that more women are having careers deeper into their lives, which I think is fantastic,” she shared. “Obviously, it doesn’t mean we should have a ticker-tape parade – someone said this to me the other day: ‘There’s so much to be proud of and there’s so much to fix.’”

Elsewhere in the interview, Hathaway opened up about having “always been really upfront about being an ambitious person”, adding, “I have goals, I have dreams; they don’t look much different than they did when I was (younger), but I’m still pursuing them.”

A masterclass in never giving up if we’ve ever seen one.
