If you cast your mind back to December 2018, you might remember that we were all gripped by the same film: Netflix’s Bird Box, the eerie psychological thriller starring Sandra Bullock that would go on to become one of the streamer’s most-watched films of all time. It told the story of Malorie (Bullock) a mother desperate to protect herself and two children from mysterious entities that caused anyone who looks at them to die. 

Bird Box was based on author Josh Malerman’s novel of the same name, and back in 2020, he announced that he’d be releasing an equally horrifying sequel. The book, titled Malorie, takes place eight years after the original story – and the good news is that a film adaptation is making its way onto our screens very soon. 

Officially titled Bird Box Barcelona, it follows a father-daughter duo named Sebastian and Anna, who team up with a group of survivors in search of safety.

“After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian (played by Los Hombres De Paco‘s Mario Casas) must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona,” reads the Netflix synopsis. “As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.”

While Bird Box Barcelona is pitched as more of a spin-off than a sequel, if the ominous trailer is anything to go by, it will feature all the chaos and turmoil of the first film. Watch it below:

“Are you ready to see?” the trailer asks, before showing the Spanish city having descended into pandemonium, where victims have become “borderline psychotic”.

As cases climb into their thousands, Sebastian must take increasingly drastic measures to keep himself, and his family, safe.

If you’re equal parts creeped out and excited by the trailer, the good news is that Bird Box Barcelona will be released on Netflix on 14 July.
