When we finished the final page of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, we all thought that was it: our adventures inside the wizarding universe had finally come to a close.

How wrong we were.

Not only were we delivered a sequel in the form of play The Cursed Child, but JK Rowling also revealed that there are five (yes, FIVE) films planned for the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them franchise. And now, at last, we know what’s going to happen in the hugely anticipated Fantastic Beasts 2.

In a statement, Warner Bros said: “JK Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald.

“However, as he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause – elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore.

“But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander.

“The adventure reunites Newt with Tina, Queenie and Jacob, but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.”

Yup, you read that right: Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler will also be reprising their roles for the second film.

And, of course, the film will see Jude Law will portray a much younger version of Dumbledore, decades before he ever became Hogwarts’ headmaster. In the prequels, Dumbledore will simply be a powerful Transfiguration teacher, fighting to right the wrongs of his troubled past.

However, as Rowling has suggested previously, Dumbledore won’t just be younger this time around – he will also be far more troubled and emotional than we ever saw him in the original Harry Potter series.

Speaking at Carnegie Hall in 2007, Rowling confirmed what some fans had always suspected – that she “always thought Dumbledore was gay” and that falling in love with dark wizard Grindelwald was his “great tragedy”.

“Falling in love can blind us to an extent,” she said.

And Dumbledore won’t be the only one troubled by matters of the heart: director David Yates has also confirmed that Newt’s mysterious ex, Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz) will play a far greater role in the upcoming films – and possibly impact his budding romance with Tina.

“Yes. Leta Lestrange comes into the second movie,” Yates told Cinema Blend.

“She’s quite complicated and damaged and confused, and Newt is absolutely still in love with her.

“So, she has a kind of power over him, and she, yeah, she’s a kind of tragic figure, so we will see a bit more of her in the second movie.”

Of course, diehard Harry Potter fans will no doubt be aware of the fact that the Fantastic Beasts films will see how Newt and Dumbledore join forces to defeat Grindelwald, with an updated version of the original book recently teasing the connection between them.

“It is true that I was the first person ever to capture Gellert Grindelwald, and also true that Albus Dumbledore was something more than a schoolteacher to me,” Rowling, as Newt, writes.

We guess we’ll have to wait for the film to find out what really happens, eh?
