From Harry Potter to The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Emma Watson is no stranger to bringing iconic books to the silver screen.

And, while everybody’s been busy talking about her upcoming movie, Beauty and the Beast, in which she’s set to bring her own feminist interpretation of Disney’s Belle to life, it seems as if Watson has been extremely busy filming another literary project: The Circle.

Based on a book by Dave Eggers, The Circle is a thought-provoking sci-fi thriller – and it’s targeting the dangers of transparency, social media and our fascination with the internet.

The film’s full synopsis reads: “When Mae Holland [Watson] is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.

“As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cosy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO.”

Hmm... when Tom Hanks tells you that he believes in the “perfectability of human beings”, you know something shifty is going on.

As you have probably guessed from the trailer’s ominous Black Mirror vibes, not all is as it seems – and Mae’s dream job looks set to become the stuff of nightmares before too long.

“Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world – even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public,” the synopsis teases.

“What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.”

Watson and Hanks are joined in this anxiety-inducing film by Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega, and Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan. And it’s worth pointing out that The Circle is set to be directed by James Ponsoldt, who brought us The Spectacular Now.

While a US release date has been confirmed for 28 April 2017, we have yet to learn when Watson’s latest big book blockbuster is due to hit UK cinemas – although we have our fingers crossed that it will be soon. This one looks like an absolute humdinger…
