Roald Dahl and Bake Off collide to make 5 amazing recipes

By Kayleigh Dray

Updated 6 years ago

The Great British Bake Off finale is upon us – and, this time, things are truly, properly final.

After this year’s winner is crowned, the show will move from BBC One to its new home on Channel 4… and everything’s about to change.

Yes, while Paul Hollywood has accepted a new three-year contract to continue judging the show, our beloved Mary Berry has chosen to remain loyal to the BBC.

Likewise, Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins have also refused to “follow the dough” to Channel 4 – which means that producers need to find a whole new team to join Hollywood for the next series.

It’s understandable, then, that fans are searching for a truly special way to celebrate everything Bake Off means to them.

But, if you’re very clever, you can turn your GBBO goodbyes into a double-whammy of a celebration; this year also marks Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday.

To mark the special occasion, Love Reading have lifted some of the most famous foodie moments from his books, and commissioned bespoke illustrations in the style of Quentin Blake to represent them.

The result?

You guessed it; it’s a Quentin Blake-Off extravaganza.

Scroll through the delicious recipes – and you might consider whipping one or two up to nibble on for that hugely-anticipated GBBO final.

Happy baking…

Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

“‘Why not?’ the fat shopkeeper said, reaching behind him again and taking another Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight from the shelf. He laid it on the counter. Charlie picked it up and tore off the wrapper... and suddenly... from underneath the wrapper... there came a brilliant flash of gold.Charlie's heart stood still.”

It was the very same chocolate bar that secured Charlie Bucket his very own Golden Ticket to Willy Wonka’s factory, so it’s no surprise that it holds a very special place in our hearts. However, while the flavours are difficult to recreate in an everyday candy bar (we need Wonka’s magic for that), it works very well in this ice cream dessert…

Ingredients:

  • 60g dark chocolate
  • 1 Cadbury's Crunchie or similar chocolate bar
  • 60g butter
  • 80g dark brown sugar
  • 150ml double cream
  • 8 marshmallows
  • Vanilla ice cream (as much as you fancy!)

Directions:

  1. Melt dark chocolate, butter, sugar, and cream together in a saucepan on a low heat
  2. Steadily stir the mixture until all the sugar has dissolved, and then gradually turn up the heat for a further 10 mins – all whilst continually stirring
  3. Break up your Crunchie into small pieces
  4. Add the broken chocolate bar, along with the marshmallows, to the chocolatey mixture
  5. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly
  6. Pour over your vanilla ice cream and enjoy

Mr Twit’s Hairy Scary Beard Cups - The Twits

“Mr Twit never really went hungry. By sticking out his tongue and curling it sideways to explore the hairy jungle around his mouth, he was always able to find a tasty morsel here and there to nibble on.”

There’s one thing you can say about Mr and Mrs Twit – they never went hungry. And, while the vivid descriptions of bug-infested foods in Roald Dahl’s The Twits may not be all that appetising, this new spin on their ultimate “treat” definitely is.

Ingredients:

  • 90g of Rice Krispies
  • 100g of milk or dark chocolate
  • 50g of butter
  • 20 medium-sized cupcake cases
  • 3 tbsp of Lyle’s Golden Syrup
  • Chocolate, orange, and green sprinkles
  • Packet of gummy worms, cut in two

Directions:

  1. Melt your chocolate and butter in a saucepan over a low heat
  2. Allow your mixture to cool for a few minutes
  3. Place the Rice Krispies in a humongous bowl
  4. Pour in the chocolate – and stir
  5. Scoop the chocolatey Rice Krispies into cupcake cases
  6. Decorate with sprinkles, gummy worms, spiders, and whatever other creepy-crawly takes your fancy
  7. Pop into the fridge and allow to cool

Fizzy Lifting Drinks – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

"'Oh, those are fabulous,' cried Mr Wonka. 'They fill you with bubbles, and the bubbles are full of a special kind of gas, and this gas is so terrifically lifting that it lifts you right off the ground just like a balloon, and up you go until your head hits the ceiling - and there you stay.'”

While we can’t promise that these drinks will have the same levitating effect as the ones described in Dahl’s beloved story, they are just as fabulous as Willy Wonka promises.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup superfine sugar
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 ½ cups freshly squeezed blood orange juice
  • 2 cups sparkling water

Directions:

  1. Mix the sugar and water together in a small saucepan
  2. Bring to boil for a total of two minutes, before removing from the heat
  3. Keep on stirring the mixture until it forms a syrup, before setting it aside to cool completely
  4. Add the mixture to sparkling water and blood orange juice
  5. Enjoy

Bruce Bogtrotter’s Chocolate Cake – Matilda

“Suddenly the Trunchbull exploded. ‘Eat!’ she shouted, banging her thigh with the riding-crop. ‘If I tell you to eat, you will eat! You wanted cake! You stole cake! And now you've got cake! What's more, you're going to eat it! You do not leave this platform and nobody leaves this hall until you have eaten the entire cake that is sitting there in front of you!’”

Trunchbull may have intended her glistening (and moist, to paraphrase our beloved Berry) chocolate cake to be a punishment, but she was rendered speechless when Bruce Bogtrotter gobbled up the entire thing. Sounds like the ideal GBBO showstopper, eh?

Ingredients:

  • 16 oz good-quality semisweet chocolate
  • 12 tbsps softened unsalted butter
  • 1 cup plus 2 tbsps sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 6 eggs, separated, yolks lightly beaten
  • 8 oz heavy cream

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius
  2. Melt half the chocolate in an oven proof dish on top of the stove, or in the microwave – take care not to burn it
  3. Stir the butter into the chocolate until it has melted
  4. Transfer chocolatey mixture to a large bowl and add sugar, flour, and lightly beaten egg yolks
  5. Beat the egg whites until stiff, before folding into the mixture gradually
  6. Pour your chocolate gooeyness into a cake tin and bake for approximately 35 minutes
  7. For the icing, melt the rest of the chocolate with cream in a saucepan over a low heat
  8. Once melted, remove from pan and allow to cool ever so slightly
  9. Carefully spread it over your cake and enjoy

Liquid Chocolate (mixed by waterfall) – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

“This stuff is fabulous...gosh, I need a bucket to drink it properly!”

Whether you opt for bucket or cup, there’s no denying that Wonka’s magical liquid chocolate (mixed by waterfall) is one of the most delicious images ever conjured up on paper. So you’ll be pleased to know that this recipe will help you create that rich and warming concoction at home, although you’ll probably have to mix this one by hand rather than rely on nearby natural phenomenon…

Ingredients:

  • 100g milk chocolate
  • 100ml milk
  • Cadbury's Flake or similar chocolate bar
  • Marshmallows
  • Dollop of Nutella

Directions:

  1. You need to embody the spirit of the waterfall for this bit; batter your chocolate bar (still in the wrapper) with a rolling pin until it is broken up
  2. Unwrap and place the pieces into a bowl
  3. Melt it in the microwave or in a small saucepan on the hob, gradually adding milk as you go
  4. Stir in the marshmallows and Nutella
  5. Whisk the mixture up
  6. Pour into a giant mug and enjoy

Tune into the Great British Bake Off finale at 8pm on BBC One, Wednesday 26 October.
