Watch: Anna Kendrick reveals her favourite female writers

There’s a lot to love about Anna Kendrick.

In the past few months alone, the self-professed “scrappy” actor has slammed the (typically female) concept of always having to play nice, cited the impending zombie apocalypse as the reason she doesn’t want kids and thrown serious shade at bridezillas who make unreasonable demands of their bridesmaids.

Plus, as anyone who follows Kendrick on social media will know, she practically makes Twitter an art form (her location is listed as “probably by the food”).

Now the 31-year-old has won us over once again by championing a few of her favourite female writers.

Speaking in a video shared exclusively with Stylist.co.uk, Kendrick describes how she beat writer’s block while penning her autobiography, Scrappy Little Nobody, by reading other books written by women she admires.

“I would open a book to a random page and read a paragraph to a couple of chapters,” she says. “Whether it’s Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling or Lena Dunham, all of those women who have written these beautiful, funny, wonderful books.”

Kendrick goes on to point out that all three women share a common theme of creating, writing and starring in their own TV shows (the always excellent 30 Rock, The Mindy Project and Girls).

She especially loves reading their books because it feels like she’s having a chat with them (we hear you, Kendrick).

“It was nice because it felt like this conversation we were having… although they weren’t listening to my side of it,” she laughs.

And that’s not all. In a second video shared with Stylist.co.uk, Kendrick also reveals where she gets the inspiration for her writing from – and the location might surprise you.

“I especially get ideas in the shower,” she says, describing how she would jump out from under the water and record her thoughts on her phone whenever inspiration struck.

“So a bunch of material in the book is shower thoughts,” she adds.
