A small, compact design filled with a world of wonders – this Story Pod is the physical embodiment of every bookworm’s favourite novel.
Although it is seemingly simple and petite (8 metres each in width and depth, and 10 metres high), all avid readers know not to judge a book by its cover, because what lies within is anything but, and is truly a well-considered piece of architecture.
Created by architecture studio Atelier Kastelic Buffey, this small, free standing black box that could be at first glance mistaken for a storage space or some sort of randomly located garage, actually opens up to something much more exciting.
By day, the Story Pod opens up to reveal a haven for reading junkies, as it invites visitors to pick books up, drop them off, or just stick around and pour over novels and poetry.
Located in the town of Newmarket, Toronto, curious residents are drawn in to this mysterious black box to find its vertical slats begin to change as they walk around it, displaying opaque walls which let light in through the larger gaps backed with transparent Lexan. This lets those inside relax and read, while intriguing those outside towards it.
More impressively still, the pod actually opens up to look like a book, too, with the walls opening outwards to mimic the cover of a book.
And just so we can’t fault it at all, the design is also friendly to the environment and local comminuty. Once locked up at night, recessed, energy efficient Led lights that are powered by hidden self-sustaining roof solar panels shine through the lattice design, brightening up dark evenings and adding to the ambience of the surrounding night markets.
So, when can we go?
