The power of fragrance knows no bounds, and picking the right scent can help lift your mood more than you thought possible.

Call me shallow, but the impact fragrance can have on my mood is incredible. One sniff of a perfume I once wore on holiday, or that my mum wears, or that evokes a happy memory, can often turn my day around almost instantly.

Of course, the link between scent and memory is extremely strong – and it’s one that’s been studied and written about extensively. And while it’s all well and good having a signature scent, I never really found mine. There are some perfumes I’ve worn more than others, but I can’t say I’ve ever really been wedded to one particular scent for a long period of time.

That’s why, when the seasons start to change and the days gradually begin to get shorter, I like to tailor my perfume choices to help maintain a positive frame of mind. I don’t like anything too sweet, and I tend to lean more towards notes of amber and fig, but I also don’t really wear anything too heavy or overbearing – which a lot of ‘winter’ perfumes can often be.

So, if you’re like me and are in the market for a transitional fragrance that’ll help provide a little bit of joy on an otherwise freezing-cold winter day, here are the ones I’ll be reaching for…

VBB portofino 97

Victoria Beckham Beauty Portofino ’97

One of three new perfumes from VB, Portofino ’97 is my favourite of the bunch. A blend of bergamot, amber and vetiver, it was inspired by one of David and Victoria’s first trips to Italy, and as somebody who’s wholeheartedly obsessed with the pair of them, I love that. To me, it’s smells like summer, but I like how the smoky notes of amber and incense add depth – plus I adore how it lingers on my skin all day long.

Phlur missing person

Phlur Missing Person

OK, I know it might be a bit cliche, but Phlur’s Missing Person has quickly become my comfort scent. I find myself reaching for it when I need some familiarity and when I want to feel cosy. It’s soft and warm and skin-like, and wearing it feels like a hug in a bottle thanks to its notes of white musk, jasmine and orange blossom. Plus, it’s the perfume me and all my friends wore on holiday in the summer, so it immediately takes me back to our sunny Spanish villa.

Tocca colette

Tocca Colette

What I love most about Tocca’s Colette is that it seamlessly blends bright, zesty lemony notes with amber, vanilla and pine needles, meaning it really does have it all. It’s not overbearing in the slightest – the first morning spritz always transports me back to sunnier days, but the way it dries down into something much more delicate and warming makes it ideal for the colder weather.
