From a street style beauty trend born in Dalston's cult Bleach salon to the catwalks at Prada, dip dye or ombre hair has come of age, and is still on the hair agenda for Autumn, especially in unusual hues.

Part of the look's appeal is its DIY aspect, and dip dye can be just as easy to achieve at home using the 'smudging' technique with hair dye - if you know what to do. So we asked colouring expert Jonathan Long from nice n' Easy to give us a video tutorial on smudging, using a vivid violet shade that will look great on lighter hair.
