There’s statement blush and then there’s Anna Sui’s SS19 yellow and fuchsia power combo. The Stylist team took on the latter, here’s how they got on…
We’ve seen - and recreated - some seriously out-there catwalk looks in our time doing Trend on Trial, but it’s fair to say Anna Sui’s SS19 look is one of the more attention-grabbing. With bold pink cheeks and a yellow forehead, here’s how the Stylist beauty team got on when they gave it a whirl…

I don’t know if it’s simply because I have the pose to end all poses in this particular picture, but I actually really like this bold look on me. Granted, my forehead is slightly verging on Marge Simpson-chic, but I’m kind of enjoying the extreme pink cheeks.
The placement – and the shade – is somehow quite flattering. It’s definitely not an everyday look, but for Trend on Trial? It potentially takes the crown as one of my favourites so far.

Oh, no, no. Just no. Even after painting copious amounts of eyeshadow and blusher onto my face, I just couldn’t get the colour to show against my skin the way I wanted.
The pink looks like I just went a bit too heavy-handed with my blusher rather than trying to create a ‘lewk’, and the yellow against my yellow-undertoned complexion just looks like I’ve rolled in some turmeric. I definitely won’t be trying this one again any time soon.
Ava Welsing-Kitcher, Stylist’s junior beauty writer:
Yeah, this isn’t going to work for me, I’m afraid. I love a healthy hit of blusher – which may or may not have something to do with Rihanna at the 2017 Met Gala – but the addition of yellowish orange just makes me look like I have both jaundice and heat rash. Plus, I could have picked a more helpful coloured top.
It looked boldly cool on the Anna Sui models, but if there’s anything I’ve learned from this here page, it’s that they’re on another plane and the same rules don’t always apply.
Verdict
It’s clear this is not a look for the yellow-undertoned members of our team. While orangey-yellow is trending across eyelids and on fingertips, a smear of Trumpesque hue on the forehead isn’t exactly goals.
The less offensive pink blush sort of made up for it, and while we might not be recreating the intensity, the flattering outer edge placement is definitely a new trick.
