The humble home blow-dry has come of age. Kenna, creative director of ghd, reveals the four styles to master this season in Stylist's 'In the Dollhouse' shoot, and we go behind the scenes in this exclusive video to watch him at work.

The ultimate blow-dry

• After washing hair with a volume-building shampoo such as Thickening Shampoo, £17.50, Bumble and Bumble, gently towel your wet hair a little and use a volumising spray such as Style Root Lift Spray, £9.95, ghd.
• Take sections three inches thick and, using a hairbrush such as Head Hugger, £10.99, Denman. Smooth each section out from the root then down. Hold the brush and dryer at the root for a second before working down.
• Direct the nozzle of the Air Hairdryer, £99, ghd downwards against the hair (to close the cuticle and aid shine) on full power and medium heat.
• Once each section is dry, blast it with the dryer’s cold shot setting to seal it, before winding it into a loop and fixing it to the head with a kirby grip. Allow to cool.
• Remove the pins and hold the ends between your fingers while backcombing slightly at the roots with the brush to make the hair look thicker. Brush through the top layer to smooth and fix into a middle parting.

The elegant wave

• Prep damp hair with a 50p piece-sized amount of volumising product, such as Supersized Bodifying Cream, £14, Percy & Reed, then turn your head upside down and blast with a hairdryer until dry.
• Take inch-thick sections of hair and wrap around the base of your finger to the tip. Gently slide off your finger, keeping the curl intact and hold in place with forefinger and thumb.
• Lightly press the curl on each side with Gold Mini Styler, £119, ghd to fix – the heat from the irons will ensure the wave holds.
• Pin one side of each curl to the head with a kirby grip, and leave until cool to the touch – around 20 minutes.
• Unravel each pinned curl and gently work through the wave with a natural bristle brush, from tip to roots.
• Add a modern matte texture by sprinkling hair powder such as Casual Sculpting Powder, £7.19, Toni & Guy, brush through and spritz with Hairspray, £10.25, Label.m.

The grown-up ponytail

• This look works best the day after a blow-dry when the hair has settled down and is more malleable. To add some extra texture thoughout, spray the roots with a dry shampoo, £2.99, Batiste and brush through to the ends.
• Using a flat brush – Oval Dressing Brush, £20, ghd, – smooth the hair back from the crown and keep it tight at the sides.
• Leave a little height on top to soften the face and secure with a thin band at the back of the head in line with the top of the ears – this will ensure the ponytail retains more volume than it would at the nape of the neck.
• Add a slick fashion edge to the ponytail by lightly misting the head with a shine spray such as Meta Sheer Dry Oil Finishing Spray, £23, Serge Normant.
• Finish by wrapping ribbon – head to VV Rouleaux for the best selection – around the base of the ponytail and fixing into a bow, for extra Sixties nonchalance.

The affluent up-do

• Work a boosting spray, such as Bouffant Coiff Lifting and Texturising Spray Gel, £17, Frédéric Fekkai through damp hair, then lift and smooth it with a dryer and large round brush like the Ceramic Vented Radial Brush, £17.50, ghd, getting as much root lift as possible.
• Using the same brush, smooth the hair back away from the face and use your fingers to loosely wrap the hair under itself at the nape of the neck. This look involves hiding the length so it’s perfect for shorter styles.
• Fix in place with kirby grips inside the looped hair so they remain hidden. Use fingers to pull the hair into place making it even on each side and to add extra volume.
• If necessary, use a tail comb, £4.10, Kent to add a touch of extra height at the crown, but leave the sides as they are to avoid creating a rigid shape with the hair.
• Allow stray hairs to come free. This will keep it from looking too mature. Fix with a strong hold hairspray such as Final Fix Hairspray, £9.95, ghd.
