Hair's most high-maintenance decade was undoubtedly the 1980s - and no hairdo was quite so groomed, coiffured and curled as a TV star hairdo.
We've already combed through (sorry) 90s TV's hairstyle gems and now it's time to venture even further back to the 80s boom years, and an exhilarating medley of perms, mullets and side ponytails. From Kylie Minogue's spring-coiled curls as Charlene in Neighbours, to Linda Evans breathtaking swoop bob for her role as Krystle Carrington in Dynasty, behold the stunning hairstyles of 80s small screen stars:

Charlene Robinson (Kylie Minogue) - Neighbours
A vigorous combination of perming solution and foils was to thank for Charlene Robinson's trademark shaggy 'do, but it was at her long-awaited wedding day to Scott that the feisty mechanic's hair really came into its own with a sprinkling of gypsophila-like adornments across the fringe.
Winnie Cooper (Danica McKellar) - The Wonder Years
Thick, lustrous brunette locks... crimped and wrenched into a high side pony with a hairsprayed fringe. Winnie was living the dream.
Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) - The Cosby Show
On a good day, Denise Huxtable's flicked up fringe could reach four inches.
Carol Vorderman - Countdown
Had Carol Vorderman drifted into obscurity and only this snap of the former Countdown star remained, we would have assumed her hair never recovered from this mullet massacre.
Sue Ellen Ewing (Linda Gray) - Dallas
Like a prototype of the 'Rachel', Sue Ellen's feminine, feathery locks helped propel Gray into 80s style icon territory.
Rebecca Howe (Kirstie Alley) - Cheers
As dynamic businesswoman Rebecca, Kirstie Alley conveyed 50% of her power through her big, boisterous hair.
Alexis Carrington (Joan Collins) - Dynasty
The buff and the bounce weighing heavily on the shoulders of Alexis Carrington is what they call a power perm.
Krystle Carrington (Linda Evans) - Dynasty
The 80s was about having it all, hence Krystle's high maintenance hybrid 'do - part Diana crop, part gigantic bouncy bob.
Michaela Strachan - TV-am
Weekend breakfast TV highlights for children of the 80s were Timmy Mallet, Michaela Strachan and Michaela Strachan's hair bow.
Anne Diamond - TV-am
As the queen of daytime TV, Anne Diamond's hair was always impeccably highlighted and totally rigid.
Lizzie Webb - TV-am
In the non-PC 80s, Lizzie Webb was dubbed 'Mad Lizzie' because she bounced around a lot doing exercise routines and possessed TV's perkiest perm.
Gladys Pugh (Ruth Madoc) - Hi-de-Hi!
If Liza Minelli did Butlins...
Not everyone in the 80s subscribed to fashion's demand that hair be voluminous - think of Gladys Pugh as Maplins' answer to Sinead O'Connor.
Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) - Moonlighting
Another woman who shunned the more hedonistic styles of the 80s, Cybill Shepherd's soft golden bob for her role as detective Maddie landed her a L'Oreal hair gig, believe it or not.
Cilla Black - Blind Date
Surprise, Surprise - Cilla's still got this hairdo.
The colour has slightly changed, but her 80s primetime mullet remains.
Janet Ellis - Blue Peter
As the face of Blue Peter, Janet Ellis (Sophie Ellis-Bexter's mum) shunned perms, colour and product for a simple wash-and-go feathery bob.
Anneka Rice - Challenge Anneka
Flowing golden locks AND a selection of natty jumpsuits - Anneka Rice, you were our idol.
Aveline Boswell (Gilly Coman) - Bread
The late, great Gilly Coman and her frizzy red hair attracted more than 20 million viewers to the show in the episode when her character Aveline wed.
Lydia Grant (Debbie Allen) - Fame
Lydia thinks we're impressed by her leg-over-head antics but we're actually mesmerised by her gravity-defying bonce.
Lady Jane Felsham (Phyllis Logan) - Lovejoy
Competing for screen time with Lovejoy's magnificent curly black mullet wasn't easy, so Lady Jane Felsham went high and wide with a curly creation of her own.
Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully) - EastEnders
As well as a teenage pregnancy courtesy of her best friend's dad, Michelle was forced to endure soap's most dramatic hairdo.
Yvette Carte-Blanche (Vicki Michelle) - 'Allo 'Allo!
'Allo 'Allo! was set in Nazi-occupied France during World War II, so perhaps a fear of alienating modern audiences is behind Yvette's historically inaccurate conglomeration of 40s victory rolls and 80s whispy fringe.
Selina Scott - The Clothes Show
Hair with attitude. Thanks, Selina Scott.
Diana (Jane Badler) - V
There wasn't only one famous Diana in the 80s, thanks to sci-fi hit V, this one came with an altogether more badass hairdo.
Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) - Doctor Who
The Time Lord's companion Nyssa sported an 80s perm of the big curl, no backcombing variety.
Mary Beth Lacey (Tyne Daly) and Christine Cagney (Sharon Gless ) - Cagney and Lacey
Hard-boiled police detectives with the softest hair on television.
