For a modern twist that lies mid-way between plait and ponytail, look no further than the bubble ponytail. This dynamic ‘do has been around for a while now, but - like a box of Jaffa Cakes unearthed in the bottom drawer of your desk - it never fails to delight.

This is a look that radiates verve and attitude, and yet, (whispers), it’s really easy to master. All you need is hair that is a few days’ old for added grip, or failing that, some texturizing spray. Then gather your hair into a pony on the top of your head or the nape of your neck, depending on where your mood takes you. Separate your hair out every two inches or so, and secure using an elastic band. Gently tease the hair between each band out into bubbles, using your fingers to help create volume. Fun fact: you can make each bubble as dramatic or subtle as you like. It’s entirely up to you and your whims. When you’re done, finish with hairspray.

Oh, and a note on the fringe: you can either tease out loose strands to either side of your face for a loose, whimsical feel. Or, pull back straight (like Brooklyn Sudano and Lindsay Ellingson, above, and Molly Sims, below) for a more directional vibe. Either way, you’ll have achieved a silhouette that really pops: the secret to great party hair, no? 

For extra festive sparkle, you could always add in star motifs,  pearl barrettes or satin ribbons (as spotted on the catwalk this season) in-between the bubbles.
