The most iconic red carpet hair moments ever

Ever since glitter, dancing and music were invented, we've looked to the red carpet to help us decide what hairstyle will look the best with our new party dress.

Whether that's a work do, a ball (if we're especially fancy) or a birthday, we always need a celebrity hairstyle on hand to give us guidance.

From Cameron Diaz's classic bob to Emma Watson's short elfin style via Jennifer Aniston's messy-but-cool locks, we've looked at some of the most iconic and inspirational 'dos on the red carpet ever.

Just call it your ultimate hairspiration. Yes, we used that word. It's allowed, we checked.

Liz Hurley

This was the ultimate hairdo for showing of that incredible Versace gown. Sure, it's very 1994 but you don't want anything to detract from the frock.

Drew Barrymore

At the Academy Awards in 1998, Drew went full-on Ninties with a short fringe and flowers placed delicately in the hair.

Cameron Diaz

After The Mask, Cameron decided to chop off her long locks and go for something much more directional and young. We still love this look on her now.

Jennifer Aniston

During the height of Friends, Jennifer was known for wearing many an iconic hairstyle on the red carpet. Here she is at the Emmy awards in 1999 wearing a dreadlock/messy style.

Angelina Jolie

At the premiere of Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005, not only did Ange go for a slick leather dress, she also went for a seductive hairstyle, with it all pushed back.

Reese Witherspoon

This was one of Reese's first red carpet appearances post her divorce with Ryan Phillippe at the 2007 Academy Awards. We adored her blunt fringe and sleek long locks.

Katie Holmes

In contrast to her usual long dark hair, in 2008 Katie opted for a grown up bob with bangs.

The Duchess of Cambridge

Kate's hair is always incredible and here, at the ARK 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner, Kensington Palace, it's no different. But that's exactly why we love it. Never a strand out of place.

Emma Watson

Once she'd finished filming Harry Potter, Emma Watson shocked the world by chopping off all of her hair. Emma sported this cute elfin crop at the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 World Film Premiere in London.

Kristen Stewart

The Twilight star has done many things to her barnet over the years. Whether that's for her role as Joan Jett in The Runaways, where she went short and punky or orange for, well, we're not sure. Basically, she's happy to experiment, which is why we love this adrogynous hairstyle on her.

Blake Lively

Blake's hair can do no wrong in our eyes. This beautiful mermaids braid she wore at the Savages film premiere in 2012 showcases it off perfectly.

Helen Mirren

When Helen turned up at the 2013 BAFTAs with pink hair, everyone was a little surprised. That said, she totally pulled this look off.

Nicole Richie

The Met Ball is renowned for crazy hair and weird and wacky gowns. 2013's affair was no different with Nicole Richie's take on the Punk: Chaos to Couture theme was particularly eye-catching.

Sienna Miller

Sienna Millar also rocked the punky look at 2013's Met Ball. We've still got hair accessory envy (that's totally a thing).

Audrey Hepburn

The Breakfast At Tiffany's star championed the gamine look. Despite the fact that this was back in 1953, Audrey's hairstyle wouldn't look out of place today.

Helen McCrory

This amazing creation at the 2014 BAFTAs was a cross between a classic French plait and a quiff. We like.

Cara Delevingne

Model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne, always gives good red carpet hair. Here she is at this year's Met Ball in Stella McCartney and a superb side swept style.

Emma Stone

The Amazing Spider-Man star has gone for an array of colours over the years - from red to brunette, to blonde, to red again and then back to blonde. While we love Emma with any kind of shade, we have to admit that this one is our favourite look.

Marilyn Monroe

There is only one woman who can really pull off the short curly, classic Hollywood style and that, of course, is Marilyn Monroe. Here she is showing off that iconic look at the Golden Globe awards in 1960.

Beyonce

While Beyonce changes her locks fairly regularly, we loved this sophisticated look on the songstress back in 2005 at the Oscars.

Lupita Nyong'o

The darling of the film and fashion world, Lupita's simple style has won over everyone and it's clear to see why. The added headband accessory made the outfit look completely sweet.

Michelle Williams

When Michelle Williams wore this golden mustard dress with a red lip and a lovely side plait back in 2006.

Anne Hathaway

For her role in Les Miserables Anne Hathaway chopped off all her hair. Check out this style from back in 2012.

Natalie Portman

During her pregnancy Natalie Portman not only won an Oscars for her role in Black Swan she also managed to look effortlessly beautiful on every red carpet event she attended.

Tilda Swinton

When is Tilda Swinton ever not cool? A: never. Here she is with a beautiful bouffant 'do at the 2012 Golden Globes.
