Ready for a summer chop? Try the tassel cut bob trend for instant cool

Chic, easy-to-style and effortlessly cool, here’s why the tassel cut should be your bob of choice.

Oh, how we love a trendy haircut with a buzzy name, particularly if said haircut is a variation on the classic bob. The good news is that there’s no shortage of these short cuts. If you weren’t keen on the wixie, the Italian bob, the cub cut or even a Hailey Bieber-inspired trim, you’ll be able to find a snip that works for you.

The latest addition to your options? The tassel cut.

As with so many internet-loved hair trends, the tassel cut has built up over in South Korea before finally making its way to the UK’s collective consciousness. It’s a clean, modern take on a bob that works perfectly for summer (hello, cool breeze on your neck) but will look just as chic as temperatures drop again.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What is the tassel cut?

“The tassel cut is essentially a long length bob with no layers to create a chunky blunt baseline in the hair,” Jo Dyer, co-founder of YOKE, tells Stylist. “Think clean, healthy ends that look like the end of a tassel. The optimum length for this cut is just below chin length as it allows your stylist to cut a good amount off to get it look healthy and blunt. The shorter you take the style the chunkier and heavier the ends of the hair will look.”

The key to a great tassel cut is those blunt, all-one-length ends for that satisfyingly sharp tassel finish, so it’s not one for anyone who likes a super-layered look. But you can mix it up with a fringe.

Dyer says the tassel bob is a great cut for this summer: “It will keep the ends of your hair sharp and fresh, helping avoid split ends, making it easy to maintain your hair while keeping you nice and cool – even when it’s hot this summer.”

Who can get the tassel cut?

“The tassel cut is perfect for poker straight hair or someone that loves to wear their hair sleek and is a dab hand with their straighteners,” Dyer notes. “It’s also a great style update from a grown-out French bob as the tassel cut will freshen up the shape and lose the old fluffy ends in one haircut.

“With more textured hair, maybe keep the length a little on the longer side so the balance of the weight at the bottom avoids looking more triangular, or ask your hairdresser for some lessons in how to blow dry your hair straight and smooth.”

Don’t rule the cut out if you’ve got waves or curls, however. “It’s perfect for both fine or thicker hair types,” says Katy Grimshaw, founder of Spectrum One Hair Extensions. “This style would also look great on curly hair.”

How to ask your hairdresser for a tassel cut

As is always the case with buzzwordy bobs, it’s best to bring in plenty of reference pics and a plain-language explanation of what you’re after, rather than just saying the name and expecting your stylist to know what you’re on about.

Dyer recommends: “Ask for a blunt one-length bob and shape or bangs around the front. No layers and minimal to no texturising or thinning of the ends of the length to keep it as blunt as possible.”

How to style the tassel cut at home

“You can style the tassel cut at home using a multitude of things,” notes Grimshaw. “You could scrunch the hair and leave it for an air light soft texture, for this we would recommend using the Surf Bomb product in the Original Mineral range. However if you’d like to opt for a sleeker style we would recommend using the Original Mineral’s Project Sukuroi Gold and blow drying the hair nice and smoothly using a round brush will give you a much sharper effect. We would also suggest adding shape to this style using straighteners, you could add a little wave to this style using our favourite Cloud Nine straighteners and dressing it out using the Original Queenie Dessert Dry texture spray.”

Dyer adds: “The tassel cut is about happy healthy and blunt ends so make sure you’re upping your hair care regime.”
