Hair stylist Luke Hersheson, of father-and-son team Daniel and Luke Hersheson, is at the forefront of all the latest hair trends and has built up a wealth of expertise tending to the locks of Jennifer Aniston and Kirsten Dunst. He tells Stylist how to create a low-slung braid, perfect for festival hair and as modelled by actress Emma Watson at Glastobury last year.
1. Start with a matte texture
For a classic low-slung festival braid you need to avoid clean, shiny, glossy hair, which shouldn’t be too hard at a festival. However, if hair has been freshly washed, give it guts and a slightly matte texture by spraying a dry shampoo (Batiste Dry Shampoo £2.35, boots.com) or rubbing a powder into the roots.
2. Create a low side parting
Pull hair, using your fingers, into a deep low side parting. This looks far sexier and less ‘done’ than a centre part.
3. Plait your hair
Using your fingers plait the hair roughly without worrying about messiness or loose strands, the key to this style is it being ‘home made’.
4. Secure the style
Secure the plait with a clear hair elastic (Blax Snag Free Elastics £2.65, hqhair.com) and secure at the base with a couple of Kirby grips.
5. Give your hair a static texture
Finally, once the plait is secured, pull it apart very gently using your hands to give it a slighty static texture.
