Yes, pineapple is good for more than just upside down cakes and tasty cocktails. It’s also a stunning skincare ingredient that we shouldn’t be sleeping on.

In case you missed it, Hailey Bieber’s Rhode Skin has brought out a new pineapple cleanser, and it’s already a hot topic in skincare circles. So far, the reviews have been pretty impressive, with testers hailing its gentle but strong cleansing abilities.

Looking for an exfoliator that’s not too intense to work into your daily skincare routine? Then pineapple products like this one could be just the thing you’re after, thanks to the handy enzymes contained in pineapple extract.

What are the benefits of pineapple for skin?

“Pineapple extract, often listed as ananas sativus fruit extract, is a popular skincare ingredient known for its exfoliating and brightening properties,” says skin expert Dr Ifeoma Ejikeme, the medical director and founder of Adonia Medical Clinic

“It contains an enzyme called bromelain, which helps to gently slough away dead skin cells, revealing smoother and brighter skin underneath. This enzyme also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it beneficial for soothing irritated or inflamed skin.”

How does pineapple extract work?

Sharon Hilditch MBE is the founder of Crystal Clear Skincare. She explains that bromelain “acts like an alpha hydroxy acid”: it’s an enzyme, so its molecules speed up chemical reactions. When we apply a product that contains bromelain, “it gently exfoliates the top layer of the skin, removing dead cells without disturbing the skin’s pH or causing irritation, unlike other harsh exfoliators”, Hilditch says.

Pineapple also contains vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, phosphorus, calcium and zinc – all ingredients “that can work wonders”, Hilditch continues. “These major compounds make pineapple a great ingredient to use on the skin. The benefits of pineapple extract for the skin include fighting acne, reducing inflammation, adding hydration and elasticity, and brightening and exfoliating. It’s a great all-rounder.”

Is pineapple extract good for all skin types?

Because it’s so gentle, pineapple extract can work on all skin types, including sensitive ones.

“It is a naturally occurring and non-toxic ingredient,” says Hilditch, “so it shouldn’t cause irritation or redness for those who have sensitive skin. However, I would recommend pregnant people or those breastfeeding avoid using any products with bromelain in them as there is not yet any evidence to suggest that it is safe.”

Meanwhile, Dr Ejikeme says pineapple extract is particularly good for those of us with dull or congested skin, in addition to anyone who wants to “improve the overall texture and brightness of their complexion”.

However, some people might find they have allergies that are triggered by bromelain. That’s why it’s important to always do a patch test whenever you try any new products. If you start to experience itching, swelling, and/or redness after the test, don’t use the product again.

What ingredients is pineapple extract similar to?

Hilditch says that papaya extract has a similar effect to pineapple in skincare. “Proteolytic enzyme is extracted from the papaya plant and is found in a lot of exfoliators. This removes dead skin cells that can clog pores and also removes damaged keratin that can build up on the skin from small bumps too.”
