We asked a dermatologist about the most effective way to apply your SPF, and the answer may surprise you

We know daily SPF application is important, but how you apply your sun cream has a huge impact on its efficacy.
You’ll know by now that we’re advocates of daily SPF applications, no matter the weather. But if you’re jetting off for ski season during the winter months or ditching the cold British weather for a beachy escape, listen up.
With balms, serums, sticks and powders to pick from, there’s really no excuse to skip sun protection. Of course, the best SPF is the one you actually use, but it turns out there’s another variable involved: the application.
My social media feed has been taken over with videos filled with people tapping on their SPF, rather than rubbing it across the skin. In theory, the benefits include avoiding white casts and stronger protection against UV rays, but are these benefits fact or fiction?
“There’s no evidence that using a tapping motion rather than a rubbing motion means your SPF is more effective,” says dermatologist Dr Emma Wedgeworth. She’s concerned that the social media trend could lead to people applying less product than they should, as tapping requires more time and effort to blend.
However, being overzealous when rubbing on your sun cream isn’t ideal either. “I discourage vigorous rubbing or excessive manipulation, which can irritate the skin. Also, spreading sunscreen in both palms before application can decrease the amount being applied to the targeted areas,” she says.
What’s the sweet spot for sunscreen application, then? “Gentle circular motions with the fingertips to massage in the product are more than enough,” says Dr Wedgeworth. She often sees people making common mistakes, such as not using enough product and avoiding the eye area, which is one of the first areas where sun damage appears.
So, remember to go easy when you apply your morning sunscreen to reap the full benefits. Oh, and don’t skip your eyelids.
