Glossier just reformulated its sunscreen and it’s more effective than ever

A reformulation of a hero product doesn’t always land well, but Glossier has proven that it’s possible to make the best even better.

When Glossier launched almost a decade ago, it helped change the face of the beauty industry. As a brand, it’s gone from strength to strength, not only in creating incredible products and making beauty brand merch a sought-after thing, but also by building and helping communities across the globe (eg Glossier’s partnership with Black Girl Fest: together, they have launched the Black Beauty Grant Programme, a scheme that offers both business and financial support to Black-owned beauty brands in the UK).

As a beauty editor, Glossier is a part of my make-up, body and skin routine, and one of my favourite – and most recommended – products is Invisible Shield SPF30. Not only does it live up to its name, but it’s also a perfect sunscreen for anybody who claims they’ve never found one that works for them. When I learned it was being reformulated, I can’t lie: I panicked.

My initial reaction aside, when I discovered the replacement sunscreen – aptly named Invisible Shield SPF50 – had a higher level of protection, I was less worried. Mostly because my only gripe with the original was that I wished it was a factor 50 rather than a 30.

Like the first iteration, Invisible Shield 2.0 is just as lightweight and feels like nothing’s there once it’s on the skin – it’s virtually undetectable thanks to the clear gel-like texture that leaves no white cast at all. Plus, the pump bottle has been replaced with a tube, meaning we can all now squeeze out every last drop with minimal effort.

Offering broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection, the formula combines rice phyto-compounds that are packed with antioxidants to protect against environmental damage, fatty acids to nourish and support the skin’s barrier and aloe leaf juice for its skin-soothing properties.

It also sits beautifully under make-up, and despite the silky texture, I haven’t found it pills at all; instead, it makes a great base for foundation: something I appreciate in any sunscreen formula, simply because it breaks down barriers and renders almost every excuse useless when it comes to encouraging people to wear SPF every single day, all year round, no matter what the weather outside is doing.

So if you’re in the market for a new sunscreen, may I wholeheartedly recommend this one to you – I promise you’ll love it as much as I do.
