Finding the right SPF when you have sensitive, reactive or delicate skin can be incredibly confusing. Here, we share advice from dermatologists and skin experts and recommend 14 sunscreens to help you find the right SPF for your skin type.
As all skin experts will attest, sunscreen is one of the most important skincare steps in our morning routines, particularly in the summer months.
There are lots of SPF myths, from ‘chemicals in sunscreen are bad’ (untrue) to the concept that SPF prevents tanning (again, false); in fact nine out of 10 cases of melanoma skin cancer can be avoided by staying safe in the sun. But SPF protects our skin from more than just the sun’s harmful rays: it helps with hyperpigmentation, counteracts the effects of pollution and external aggressors, and protects sensitive skin from being quite so reactive.
Mariam Hakimi, skincare expert pharmacist at Boots Beauty, says: “No matter your age, skin type or condition, one of the most important steps in your daily skincare regime is a broad-spectrum sunscreen, I recommend using a minimum of SPF30 and high UVA protection all year round to help protect the skin and prevent damage from both UVA and UVB rays.”
Protection from the harmful effects of pollution is not to be underestimated, explains skincare expert Dr Ifeoma Ejikeme and her team from Adonia Medical Clinic. “Pollution can affect the skin in negative ways, from vessels to background redness, rosacea, high pigmentation, dull skin and premature fine lines.”
There are so many brilliant sunscreens available today, and many behave like skincare. Gone are the days of heavy, glossy sunscreens. So, if you struggle to decide which sunscreen to go for, it’s good to consider your skin type and any known skin conditions.
Sensitive or reactive skin
For those with sensitive or reactive skin, it can be risky to use multiple skincare products. Paula’s Choice products don’t contain fragrance, harsh alcohol or essential oils, which can trigger reactions, and every ingredient the brand works with has extensive research proving that it’s beneficial to skin.
Heather Wish, the UK education manager at Paula’s Choice, says: “It is vitally important for skin that you avoid using skincare products containing essential oils or synthetic fragrances, drying alcohols or harsh abrasive cleansers as they are the primary cause of skin ageing and can trigger acne and rosacea, increase sensitivity and make skin more vulnerable to environmental damage.”
Dry or dehydrated skin
If your skin is dry, go for a creamy, hydrating sunscreen. La Roche Posay test its sunscreens on sensitive skin as standard and many of them come in different weights, meaning you can opt for a more hydrating texture without clogging pores and causing your skin to react.
If you’re looking for brightening antioxidants, Paula’s Choice has just launched a new vitamin C SPF50 that includes a lower percentage of iron oxide so it can be used by people with sensitive skin.
Rosacea
Skin expert Debbie Thomas says: “A well-formulated SPF will also protect your skin from pollution, which, in addition to extreme weather, can be a cause of broken blood vessels on your face. These vessels can then increase the sensitivity of the skin and exacerbate symptoms of rosacea. Always remove SPF at the end of the day. A minimum of SPF30 is fine in winter but use SPF50 in summer, and don’t forget to reapply for all-day protection.”
Dr Catriona Maybury, dermatologist and Dermatica medical lead, adds: “For those with rosacea, look for primers and tinted moisturisers containing green pigment and built-in broad-spectrum SPF to protect against UV exposure. Choosing a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula made for sensitive skin types will allow you to colour-correct redness without clogging pores or causing further irritation. Apply before foundation to camouflage redness while protecting your skin.”
Oily or acne-prone skin
If you have oily skin, mattifying, oil-free options are where to start. Ava Chandler-Matthews, co-founder of Ultra Violette, says: “If you have any inflammatory skin issues like acne or rosacea, I would look for a zinc oxide-based SPF as zinc is a wonderful anti-inflammatory. It really depends on skin type and concern, but seeking out the highest SPF number primary sunscreen (ie a product sold primarily as an SPF – not a moisturiser or foundation that includes SPF) should be where you start.”
Ultra Violette has various lightweight, fragrance-free options that are great for oily or acne-prone skin. Lean Screen is the brand’s thinnest SPF consistency to date and Clean Screen has a gel texture, zero fragrance and offers SPF30 protection.
Perioral dermatitis
Anyone who suffers from perioral dermatitis should opt for a mineral sunscreen. Ultra Violette’s Lean Screen is a mineral-only SPF and one of the best zinc sunscreens available. It will soothe sensitive types and has a subtle matte finish.
Vichy’s Mineral89 products are hydrating and antioxidant-rich, and work to maintain the skin barrier – something that is often compromised on skin affected by perioral dermatitis (and rosacea).
And finally, don’t forget to protect delicate areas of your face and head. Dr Emma Craythorne, consultant dermatologist and founder of Klira, says: “Many people miss their scalps when applying SPF. If you don’t apply SPF to your parting or visible scalp, we recommend wearing a sunhat to keep the area protected. Your eyelids are one of the most delicate areas of skin and are often missed when applying SPF. Pack a pair of sunglasses to help protect this area. Your shades will also help prevent squinting and minimise creasing next to your eyes. Remember to reapply every two hours – both your face and body – when you’re outside all day.”
