If you want to soothe any dry skin before summer, spring is the perfect time to start – and ceramides are the barrier-boosting ingredients to shop.
Ceramides are found naturally in our skin and adding more to our body care routines can work wonders for locking in moisture and strengthening the skin’s barrier.
So if you’ve been suffering from cold-weather dryness now’s the time to work some ceramides into your routine, to save your skin in time for the warmer weather to hit.

What exactly are ceramides?
Dr Hiba Injibar, consultant dermatologist and the founder of Dermasurge Clinic, tells Stylist: “Ceramides are a type of lipid molecule naturally found in the skin’s outermost layer, the stratum corneum. They play a crucial role in maintaining the skin’s barrier function by helping retain moisture and protect against environmental stressors. When applied topically in skincare products, ceramides help reinforce the skin’s barrier by filling in the gaps between skin cells, effectively sealing in moisture and preventing water loss.”
What kinds of skin complaints can ceramides help with?
“Ceramides can help alleviate a variety of skin complaints,” says Dr Injibar, “including dryness, dehydration, sensitivity and irritation. By reinforcing the skin’s natural barrier function, ceramides effectively improve moisture retention, restore balance and enhance the skin’s ability to defend against external aggressors, resulting in healthier and more resilient skin.”
How long does it take to see results?
“The time it takes for products containing ceramides to work can vary depending on individual skin concerns and the specific formulation of the product,” says Dr Jinah Yoo, consultant dermatologist and the founder and medical director at Maylin x Dr Jinah Yoo Dermatology. “Generally, noticeable improvements in skin hydration and barrier function may be observed within a few days to a few weeks of consistent use.”
What kinds of body care products should people look for that contain ceramides?
“People should look for body care products – such as body lotions, creams and moisturisers – that contain ceramides,” Dr Yoo explains. “These products can help improve skin hydration, strengthen the skin barrier and alleviate various concerns such as dryness, itching and irritation, particularly for those with dry or sensitive skin.”
