A damaged skin barrier brings with it a whole heap of issues, from redness to breakouts. If you’re finding your skin is more sensitive than usual, it’s time to invest in a barrier repair product.

We may blame redness on the weather, breakouts on hormones or irritation on a product we’ve recently added to our routine, but there may be just one reason your skin’s acting up: you’ve damaged your skin barrier.

It sounds scary but don’t fret, there are a number of products and ingredients to incorporate into your skincare routine that can have it in tip-top shape in no time. But first up, let’s get into what your skin barrier is and why it’s so important.

What is your skin barrier?

While the term is thrown around a lot, we tend to only pay attention to it when it’s damaged. However, it’s make or break for your skin. Here’s exactly how it works:

“The skin barrier, or stratum corneum, is the outermost layer of the skin and acts as a protective shield against environmental factors, pathogens and water loss,” explains dermatologist Dr Derrick Phillips. “It consists of dead skin cells and lipids that form a barrier, helping to maintain skin hydration and overall integrity.”

When it’s healthy and intact, your skin glow reaches maximum capacity. However, when it’s not at its best, that’s when issues arise. “A damaged skin barrier will result in redness, dryness and flakiness of the skin, as well as a feeling of tightness or irritation,” Dr Phillips explains.

With this irritation comes sensitivity. “You may also experience increased sensitivity to products that your skin would normally tolerate, leading to stinging or burning sensations,” he says. As the protective barrier is weakened, spots and inflammation are also more likely to occur. Basically, keeping your skin barrier strong and healthy should definitely be on your to-do list.

What ingredients help strengthen the skin barrier?

There are many products specifically designed for the job (more on that later). However, there are some key ingredients to look out for when picking a product.

Number one? Ceramides, which is probably not a surprise. “To help repair a damaged skin barrier, look for ceramides, as they restore moisture and strengthen the skin,” says Dr Phillips. Another is “Hyaluronic acid. It’s deeply hydrating and improves elasticity and resilience,” he explains. The final one on the skin barrier hit list is our favourite, niacinamide. “This can reduce inflammation and enhance barrier function, promoting a smoother, healthier complexion,” says Dr Phillips.

Now that we’ve got the low-down, here’s our selection of the best products to help strengthen your skin barrier.
