Whether you’re growing out a pixie cut or have decided to take the plunge and go ultra-short, here’s why the shingle bob should be on your radar…

From the Italian bob to the clavi cut, it’s safe to say that there’s a bob haircut out there to suit everyone. Plus, each new season brings with it an influx of fresh new takes on the classic chop, and this autumn is no different. Enter the shingle bob – the latest in a long line of chic short hairstyles.

If you’ve been toying with the idea of going ultra-short or are in that awkward in-between stage of growing out a pixie cut, the shingle bob might just be the perfect solution. This hairstyle is all about sharp lines, precision and embracing that retro vibe – but with a modern-day coolness.

What is the shingle bob?

“A classic shingle cut looks like a typical style from the 1920s,” explains Tom Warr, hairstylist and academy director at Blue Tit salons. “It’s a short, structured bob cut that exposes the hairline of the neck, and gradually lengthens towards the front to sit at cheek level.”

Named after the ‘shingling’ technique used by hairdressers, it’s meticulously cut to create soft, angled layers that stack neatly together, creating a tapered effect.

“It’s similar to a French bob style haircut and is often also characterised by a soft yet stand-out fringe.”

For those growing out a pixie cut, the shingle bob is a great transitional style. Its layered structure allows you to regain some length while maintaining a flattering shape, avoiding that dreaded ‘in-between phase’ when your hair just doesn’t feel right. Plus, it gives you the freedom to experiment with styling – do you want to go sleek and polished or embrace a more undone, tousled look?

What to ask your hairdresser for

If you’re heading to the salon and ready to take the plunge with a shingle bob, make sure you ask for a short, layered cut that tapers towards the nape of your neck.

“I would request a very short bob with a fringe – you could almost refer to it as a micro-bob,” says Warr. “However, we always recommend bringing imagery to appointments as descriptions differ from person to person. It’s so useful for any stylist to see a visual representation of what you are after.”

You might also want to consider adding a fringe. A soft, wispy fringe can enhance the vintage feel of the style, while a blunt, heavy fringe can give it a more contemporary edge. Just make sure you consult with your stylist first to discuss your face shape and the kind of texture you’re after. This haircut relies heavily on precision, so it’s worth investing time in finding the right stylist for the job.
