Homemade rice water has been all over TikTok – but now, its potent derivative, rice protein, is taking centre stage in professional haircare…
For the past year, #RiceWater has been racking up millions of views on TikTok, with beauty influencers and haircare enthusiasts swearing by its ability to strengthen strands and boost growth. But while DIY fermented rice water has dominated the conversation, the real game-changer is its concentrated derivative: rice protein. Already cropping up in new-gen shampoos, conditioners and treatments, this under-the-radar ingredient is packed with amino acids that fortify hair from the inside out – without the mess of DIY rice water rinses.
“Rice protein is incredibly beneficial for the hair because it strengthens, volumises and improves elasticity,” explains trichologist Hannah Gaboardi. “It’s rich in amino acids, which help to repair and protect the hair cuticle, making it especially great for those with damaged or fragile strands.” Unlike traditional protein treatments, which can sometimes leave hair feeling brittle if overused, rice protein strikes a balance between strengthening and softening – making it a go-to for anyone dealing with breakage, dullness or limp locks.
So, what exactly is rice protein, and how is it extracted? “Rice proteins are plant-based proteins derived from rice grains, known for their strengthening and volumising properties in haircare,” explains Niki Mehta, co-founder of Fable & Mane. “They are typically extracted through a gentle hydrolysis process, which breaks down the proteins into smaller molecules called peptides. This makes them more bioavailable, meaning they can penetrate the hair shaft more effectively.”
Another reason rice protein is making waves? It’s impressively lightweight. While heavy-duty proteins like keratin and collagen can sometimes weigh finer hair types down, rice protein works more subtly, reinforcing the hair structure without sacrificing volume. “As a key ingredient in our heat-activated Moisturizing Volume Spray, rice protein helps lift the hair at the roots, adding natural body while reinforcing hair strands for a fuller, healthier look,” adds Niki.
Beyond volume, rice protein brings a host of benefits to all hair types. “It works wonders in improving hair elasticity and reducing breakage,” says Niki. “It forms a lightweight barrier around the hair shaft, enhancing moisture retention and protecting against damage.
And while DIY rice water rinses have their place, they can be tricky to get right. “Rice protein offers a more potent and controlled alternative,” says Gaboardi. “It delivers the same strengthening and conditioning benefits but in a more targeted, effective way.” Plus, with brands harnessing its power in everything from leave-in sprays to deep-conditioning masks, it’s never been easier to incorporate into your routine.
So, whether you’re looking to revive brittle ends, add body to fine strands or simply give your hair a much-needed health boost, rice protein is the ingredient to look out for. Ready to try it for yourself? Here are the best products to get you started…
