Niacinamide is a hero skincare ingredient that’s in everything from our serums to eye creams. Now, the antioxidant is appearing in haircare too. Here’s everything you need to know…
Over the last few years, our haircare products have had a real shake-up. Our wash-and-go mantra has been replaced by routines packed with serums, scalp products, masks and creams. And even if your haircare routine is still fairly basic, it’s likely the products you’re using have undergone a major ‘skinification’ – that is, adopting ingredients and products you’d more commonly find in skincare.
From hyaluronic acid shampoos to salicylic-based serums, many ingredients that are commonly found in skincare are now being utilised in haircare too. Which is where niacinamide comes in. From shampoo and conditioners to leave-in masks and volumising hair sprays, niacinamide is being heralded as a new haircare hero. But if you’re wondering what benefits niacinamide can have in your haircare routine, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we break down what the much-loved vitamin can do for your hair – plus the products you can find it in…
What is niacinamide?
Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3 that’s often used in skincare to strengthen the skin barrier. It also holds anti-inflammatory properties, so it’s useful for unclogging pores and reducing blemishes. But niacinamide is now cropping up more frequently in haircare formulas too – for good reason.
How can niacinamide benefit hair?
“Niacinamide is great for nourishing the hair from the inside out,” says Darren Fowler, Kérastase hair expert and founder of Fowler35. “It promotes blood circulation to the scalp and helps to fortify strands, for longer, stronger hair.” It can also improve the texture and feel of damaged hair as it helps to build and fortify keratin production.
What products should people look out for containing niacinamide?
“I always recommend the Nutritive range by Kérastase,” says Fowler. “Their Nutri-Supplement Scalp Serum is a go-to as it’s a great way to provide hydration to dry hair and, importantly, the scalp. The Bain & Fondant in the Nutritive range also contains niacinamide, a great basis for a routine to ensure healthy locks.”
Is niacinamide good for any particular hair types or textures?
“The beauty of niacinamide lies in its versatility. It’s not just for a specific hair type or texture; it can work for all hair types.” As niacinamide is often used as a strengthening ingredient, it’s a great one to look out for in formulas you’re using if you’re looking to grow your hair, build thickness or generally boost hair health.
How long should you expect to see results after using a haircare product with niacinamide?
“As with most hair products, results can take time. Expect to see visible improvements within a few weeks of consistent use. Remember, your hair’s transformation is a gradual process but the results are worth the wait.”
Grow Gorgeous Intense Thickening Hair and Scalp Mask
Grow Gorgeous was one of the first haircare brands to champion niacinamide in its formulas. “Niacinamide has a vital role in growing long and strong hair due to its circulation-boosting properties,” the brand writes via its website. “It enhances the appearance and feel of hair, by increasing body, suppleness, sheen. It also enhances the appearance of dry or damaged skin on the scalp by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness.”
This thickening hair mask also contains hyaluronic acid to help smooth and moisturise hair for a silky soft finish, while shea butter and coconut oil nourish and add shine.
