Looking for a red hot make-up trend for 2024? You’re in the right place…
We’ve said it before, and we’ll absolutely say it again: red is going to be a massive colour trend this year.
And that trend is stretching to make-up, from red lips and nail colours to the rouge-iest of blushers and eyeliners. We’re going to get experimental with it all, and we can’t wait to start playing around.
Simone Otis, head artist at 19/99 Beauty, says red is a front-runner colour this year for a few reasons. “First and foremost, a pop of red is an incredibly easy and approachable way to inject excitement into your make-up routine,” she says. “It offers a bold statement without being overly complicated, making it accessible for make-up enthusiasts of all skill levels.
“The versatility of red in make-up is another key factor behind its dominance in 2024. Red effortlessly allows for bold expressions, allowing individuals to tailor their look according to their preferences – be it a daring eye-catching gaze or a statement lip that commands attention.”
Christina Møller, senior behavioural analyst at market researcher Canvas8, suggests we may be drawn to vibrant make-up looks as a form of escapism in dull, dreary times.
“As the northern hemisphere trudges through winter, beauty enthusiasts are looking for pops of colour to brighten up darker days,” she says – adding that inspiration can be drawn from the autumn/winter 2023 catwalks, where bright red lips were a key trend.
How to make red make-up work for you
Yes, there’s always your trusty red lipstick as an option. But what if you want to branch out a bit?
“It’s easy to wear a bold lip or bold eye look and keep the rest of your make-up neutral,” says Otis. “Instead of the usual black eyeliner, try a red flush of colour. Wearing colour on your eyes has the added effect of amplifying your eye colour. Try different shades to see what colours make your own eye colour seem to change or pop.” An easy way to do this is using a creamy eye pencil to draw a thin or thick line, she adds, before setting with powder.
As a bonus tip, Otis suggests trying “a powder lip or blurred lip look. Apply your bold lip colour then, using a small fluffy brush, dab a layer of setting powder over the top.”
