Which is why we set pastry genius and Junior Bake Off judge Ravneet Gill her very own technical challenge: to roadtest 21 red lipsticks while eating, sipping and chatting to see which ones rise to the occasion. “I wear lipstick every day, even if I don’t have other make-up on. You’ll find one in every bag and pocket,” she says at her Stylist photoshoot, snacking on leftover chicken wings while her winning formula (no spoilers yet) stays firmly in place.

After studying at Le Cordon Bleu, Gill worked as a pastry chef in some of London’s most notable kitchens, including Llewelyn’s, St John and Wild by Tart. She’s since penned three cookbooks alongside regular TV appearances, and when she’s not working, she’s eating – which is how we knew she’d really put these lipsticks through their paces. “I tested each one for a full day,” she says. “I kiss my baby, Donnie, constantly so it was really funny – I could see which ones were coming off quite quickly on his head. I’ve always got a coffee on the go too, so I could see what came off on the rim of my cup. Or which drinking glasses had the most noticeable marks when I stacked the dishwasher. Even my bedding was a good barometer: some days, I’d notice little bits of red all over my White Company sheets.”

Not one to do things by halves, Gill became an honorary member of the Stylist beauty team, keeping detailed notes on which lipsticks deserve a spot in your permanent rotation. “Before, I was very stuck in my ways about lipstick and only ever bought from the same brands,” she says. “But this has really shown me that brands and formulations have moved on.” Meet the 10 red lipsticks that aced Ravneet’s ultimate taste test.
