The exact products Lupita Nyong’o’s make-up artist used to create her striking Baftas look
8 years ago
Make-up artist Nick Barose took to Instagram to give us a glimpse of the exact products which made up actress Lupita Nyong’o’s stunning Baftas beauty look, so you can recreate it yourself.
At last night’s Baftas, the beauty looks seemed to express both unity and defiance, as celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence, Gemma Arterton and Anya Taylor Joy offset their jet-black dresses – worn in solidarity with the Time’s Up movement – with bold red lips.
But Black Panther actress Lupita Nyong’o’s make-up was arguably the most striking of all.
With red lips, bold winged eyeliner and a wash of metallic blue eyeshadow in the inner corners to accentuate her eyes, her look was a far cry from the fresh and ethereal nudes, peaches and pinks that have flooded awards ceremonies of late – and although it shouldn’t work, it does. In fact, we’re completely sold on it.
The best part? Make-up artist Nick Barose took to Instagram as Lupita walked the red carpet to share an exact product breakdown of her picture-perfect look.
To mirror the star’s role in new movie Black Panther, Nick drew Lupita’s feline flick with Lancôme’s DramaLiqui Pencil in Noir Intense. If you aren’t a fan of fashioning cat-eyes with pencils, reach for Tom Ford’s Eye Defining Pen, £45. The dual-ended liquid liner boasts one super-fine nib and one that is slightly thicker to make light work of wings, whatever the size. Plus, the staying power is second to none.
- Not content with solely a flick, Nick accentuated Lupita’s eyes with a flash of midnight blue eyeshadow in the corners to give the classic look a little more dimension. The product in question? Lancôme’s Ombre Hypnose Stylo in Bleu Chrome, £21. Scribble the stick straight onto your eyelids and use your fingers to blend.
- Of course, Lupita’s semi-matte red lips stole the show. Nick swiped Lancôme’s Color Design Matte Lip Crayon in Oui Monsieur straight from the bullet, but Sleek Make Up’s Lip VIP Lipstick in Walk of Fame, £5.49, is a brilliant match if you prefer traditional lipsticks. Filled to bursting with vitamin E, shea butter and coconut oil, it keeps lips moisturised and plump.
Complete the look with a dash of dewy blush like Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge in Chocolate Cherry, £22.
As always, Lupita’s trusty hairstylist Vernon François was on hand to style her hair. The towering bun that the duo created at the 2016 Met Gala was replaced with a low-maintenance look. The star wore her hair naturally, adorned with two simple rope-style headbands.
In a recent interview with Stylist, Vernon talked about the media’s representation of afro-textured hair.
“The media still has a way to go with its portrayal of afro-textured hair,” he said.
“What do the people around the table making the decisions look like? How diverse are they? I use the analogy of a fruit bowl – if it’s all apples in the bowl, everything’s going to come out green and shiny. We need some mangoes, kiwis and bananas in the conversation.”
