Good hair days ahead. The trending ‘hush cut’ offers a low-maintenance style for all hair types. We spoke to an expert to find out everything you need to know about the must-have hairstyle for autumn.
The ultimate hair goal? To have a good hair day every day, of course. So it’s no surprise that the ‘hush cut’, a low-maintenance, always-on-point style, has become the most coveted haircut in salons all around and is set to take over your social feeds this autumn.
Instagram and TikTok have already seen this Korean-born haircut shoot to popularity thanks to its ability to add natural movement to your hair and look great from all angles. With over 70 million views on TikTok and rising, this trend is very much here to stay.
From the results you can expect to the techniques and maintenance involved, we turned to the hair experts to discover everything you need to know about the buzzy new trend. Clear your schedule because we think a hair appointment might be on the horizon.
What is the hush cut?
“Originating from Korea, the hush cut is one of those trends that takes off on TikTok, and suddenly, all your clients are talking about,” Mark Leeson, Revlon Professional’s global ambassador, tells Stylist. “The key element is plenty of soft layers that cascade through the hair and create the most perfect, light, feathered shape. You can team it with face-framing layers or even a grown-out wispy fringe, but the end result is always super flattering.”
Errol Douglass at Errol Douglass Hair Salon adds: “Because of the layers, it’s a cut that falls into place almost perfectly, every single time, and continues to look great even when it’s growing out. And that’s the real beauty of it.”
And how do stylists do it, you ask? “There’s no exact formula to it, which is what makes it so adaptable,” Douglass explains.
JR Slane at The House of Keune by Bloom adds: “The general rule is that there should be no blunt ends or straight edges with this cut.” Instead, think of autumn’s carefree breeze.
“It is about added softness and curves through long layers and either face-framing layers or soft-blended bangs,” says hairstylist Jack Winn. “The overall result is a weightless, airy hair cut through layers at all angles, rather than a straight blunt cut.”
Winn cautions that “it’s important not to take the layers too short or to add too many” when it comes to those with above-the-shoulder hair lengths as “this can venture into wolf cut territory which is much sharper and more defined”.
So, no blunt cutting should be used to achieve this look. But those scared of straying can rest assured the hair experts all agree there is a hush cut for everyone…
Who can wear the hush cut?
“You can achieve this cut on most hair types,” confirms Douglass, noting that it’s “one of the most versatile ways to wear mid-length to long hair”. For those with shorter hair, Daniel Argenio at 65 Walton Salon recognises the trend as being extremely beneficial, even if you have hair extensions: “With the weight removed and no strong, blunt ends, it’s a versatile way for bobs or mid-length styles to boost their length and end up with a beautifully cascading style.”
Slane adds that those blessed with curls can also join in on the hush-cut party, noting that stylists will tend to cut the layers longer so that they have plenty of room to shrink into place. Winn explains: “This cut will appear different from person to person, especially with hair thickness.
“Thinner hair types can absolutely have the hush haircut style, but the number of layers would be less and taken up a little higher to create more shape and volume for that natural fall. For thicker hair types, soft long layers can be built in and not taken up as high, unless around the face for that grown-out, low-key fringe.”
Perfect for all face shapes, lengths and textures, it’s clear to see why this cut has taken the internet by storm. But its low-maintenance nature is what really sets this style apart.
How to style your hush cut at home
Owing to the perfectly placed layers and the weightless, natural movement that results, it takes minimal styling to maintain this cut. Its low-key shape lends itself to a ‘woke up like this’ salon-swish every day. “The hush haircut is the ultimate hairstyle for people who want low maintenance between appointments. It’s easy to see why it’s popular as it’s versatile in terms of styling with ease,” says Winn.
The products to turn to are those that boost hair’s texture, hold and shine to enhance the effortless natural movement that the cut has achieved. Here’s what the experts recommend.

”If you do add styling products, texture sprays are going to be your friend as they help support the appearance of hair movement, promoting that soft volume and low maintenance vibe,” says Winn. This hero spray boosts volume and delivers texture with a long-lasting finish.
