Freelance beauty editor Chloe Burcham has been tinting her eyebrows at home for over 10 years. Below, she rounds up the best tinting kits, plus her top tips…

Whether you like a fluffy and feathered finish or a laminated look, one easy way to ensure your eyebrows are always looking tip top is by tinting them. Because no matter what your natural hair shade is, tinting your eyebrows allows for each individual brow hair to be captured and coloured (even those tiny little hairs), allowing your brows to appear thicker and fuller.

But, heading to a salon every six-to-eight weeks to get your brows tinted is not only time-consuming but expensive too. I started tinting my eyebrows at home when I was 20 years old and have never looked back. Eyebrow tinting kits are easy to use and you can usually get about eight uses out of them, making them really cost-effective. So if you’re considering tinting your eyebrows at home, you’ve come to the right place. Below I round up my top tips, plus the best eyebrow tinting kits on the market for a professional-looking finish.

How to tint your eyebrows at home

It goes without saying that you should always follow the instructions provided within the kit, as some kits slightly differ from others, but overall, the application process is usually fairly similar. A patch test is required 24 hours prior – so make sure you carry this out first to avoid any allergic reactions.

Next up, you’ll want to protect the skin around your eyebrows from soaking up any colour. I find that a lip balm is perfect for creating a barrier between my brow hairs and skin. Apply this above, below and in between your brows – anywhere you don’t want any excess dye to accidentally tint. It also helps you define the shape of your brows.

Then, you’ll usually be required to mix up your eyebrow tinting kit. There’s often a developer lotion and tinting cream you need to mix together (similar to at-home hair dye kits), so make sure you follow the instructions to ensure you get the right ratio of each.

I like to apply the eyebrow tint with a double-ended spoolie brush. This way, you can brush the tint through your brows and use the angled end to really tidy up the shape. Once you’ve applied the tint, leave it in place for around five minutes (again, make sure you read the instructions here) before wiping off with a cotton bud.
