Stylist breaks down the intimidating trend of glossy eyelids.
Mastering the art of catwalk-worthy glossy lids is no mean feat, but that hasn’t stopped us lusting after the look.
Along with coloured mascara and ombre lips, glossy lids are something we love – and according to Pinterest, saves for glossy eyes are up by an enormous 137% for 2018.
But don’t worry - a glossy eye doesn’t have to be as sticky, messy, or complicated as it might sound.
As matte and shimmery shades take a backseat, Stylist is on hand to take you through the dos and don’ts of re-creating latex lids with the help of Sascha Jackson, Lead Pro Makeup Artist at Stila UK.
How to create a glossy eye
1) Prep the look by lining the lower lash line with a soft, neutral brown pencil and blend with a fluffy brush to make sure the line is diffused. Our failsafe option is Charlotte Tilbury’s Classic Eyeliner in Sophia, £16.
2) Apply the eyeshadow of your choice (MUAs are currently championing sunset peaches and golden hues) and blend it up towards the brow bone.
3) Then, simply layer with gloss. You can go in with a brush, but it’s probably easier to dab it on with your fingers. Try Mac’s Lipglass, £15.50 or 3INA’s The Eye Gloss, £9.95, for a formula free from stickiness.
4) Use a waterproof mascara to keep lashes and lids intact. Our favourites include Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara, £19, Eyeko Sport Waterproof Mascara, £19 or Urban Decay’s Cannonball Mascara, £16.50.
Dos and don’ts of mastering a glossy eye
Don’t…
Apply too much gloss! Avoid it feeling like glue by layering until you’re happy with the amount. “It’s much easier to add than take away!” says Jackson. Words to live by.
Do…
Keep skin clean and fresh.
“Use a good primer and conceal where needed,” says Jackson. “A pop of cream blusher will give a gorgeous radiant finish on the cheeks. Team that with a subtle highlight to really compliment the look. I use Stila’s Convertible Colour Dual Lip & Cheek Cream in Peony, £16, and Heaven’s Hue Highlighter in Kitten, £20. For eyes, add a sweep of mascara to separate and add definition to the eyes. Then finish with a brushed-up brow to complete the look,” she adds.
Don’t…
Be afraid to play with texture. Contrasting glossy eyes with a matte lip makes for a stunning look, so pair Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Berry Chic, £8.49, a deep plum shade, with a neutral lid. Or, clash colours by teaming Dior’s Rouge Liquid Lipstick, £27.50, a vibrant red, with waxy taupe eyelids.
Don’t…
Shy away from colour. Make a statement with marine blues, olive greens and sunset oranges. The great thing about a glossy lid is that you can really experiment with colours. “There really isn’t a rule with this look,” says Jackson.
