Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Kat Graham and Jourdan Dunn have all showcased heavy new bangs during Paris Fashion Week.
Nothing sharpens up a hairstyle more than a thick, blunt glossy fringe. Think Uma Thurman’s monochrome-loving Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction, a young doe-eyed Elizabeth Taylor and of course, flapper icon Louise Brooks’ razor-sharp fringed bob.
However, it’s a distinctive, high-maintenance look that has increasingly fallen away in favour of softer, wavier styles.
Until Paris Fashion Week, that is.

With all eyes upon them during the last week of Fashion Month, Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Kat Graham and Jourdan Dunn have all chosen to showcase a very particular type of bangs.
Theirs is a glossy, symmetrical cut that is equal parts youthful and sophisticated. With no wisps, waves or side partings in sight, their new fringes signify control, purpose, poise and confidence.
Much like Thurman’s stylish Wallace, Rihanna opted for straight glossy black locks and scarlet red lipstick to finish off her fringe at the Fenty launch party. While the singer has tried out fringes in the past, this feels like a significant restyling after years sticking to a swept-back look.

Dua Lipa unveiled her glossy lob and matching bangs at the Yves Saint Laurent launch party for the label’s new Libre fragrance. The New Rules star, who previously favoured a swept back look, also showed off her new ‘do in an Instagram post referencing Mean Girls.
“My hair is full of secrets,” she wrote.
We’re used to seeing the 24-year-old’s choppy lob tucked behind her ears or teased into a slight wave. The change in style feels more refined, elegant and edgy and is a fitting change for a music star stepping into the fashion industry.
Jourdan Dunn made an impact at Balmain, teaming her killer new fringe and long, straight hair with a cutaway mini dress and knee high boots.
“New fringe who dis???” the supermodel wrote on Instagram as she revealed her new hairstyle.
It’s a far cry from her fresh-faced signature style and the loose, beachy look she recently promoted for her upcoming Mugler campaign.
As well as being a celebrity beauty trend, the new blunt fringe is a fitting signal of fashion’s definite move towards autumn. The time to cut a thick curtain of hair over the forehead is not during the baking heat of an Indian summer but rather when temperatures have dropped and the look can be fully appreciated with stylish winter clothes.

See Kat Graham at Balmain. The sheer studded cape is spectacular, but her new fringe gives her outfit the polished edge it deserves.
While Graham often flirts with a fringe, this is the sleekest hairstyle we’ve seen on her yet. There’s something about a jagged edge bob and perfectly straight, shiny bangs that bellows “designer”.
Along with the stars at Paris Fashion Week, Courteney Cox and Liv Tyler saw September as the time to make a case for new heavy fringes.
