Thinking of cutting a bob? This is what a hair stylist wants you to know

If you’re about to brave a bob, there are some things you should keep in mind to help ensure you don’t experience chopper’s regret. This is a hair expert’s sage advice…

Bobs, whether it’s the Italian variety or the romcom crop, have been absolutely dominating the hair trend world this year.

And we’re just as (b)obsessed as the rest of you, thanks to everyone from Ayo Edebiri to Megan Fox rocking the style.

But before you reach for the shears, don’t forget that trying a new look and losing a lot of length can have a big impact on the way we look (and feel). On top of that, there’s a big learning curve that goes along with styling a totally different cut.

With that in mind, here’s what a professional stylist implores you to consider ahead of braving the chop.

Every bob should be unique

Aveda Lifestyle Salon & Spa’s artistic director and educator Christophe Potin tells Stylist: “There is no formula. Every haircut has to be tailored to the client’s hair texture, and there are thousands of ways to cut a bob. On straight hair, precision hair cuts done with scissors are the key to a beautiful shape. While on super-thick hair, it could be cut with a razor if we are looking to achieve movement and texture. It’s also super important to know if the client will blow dry their hair or leave it to dry naturally.”

You’ll probably need new styling products

“A new haircut would need new products before blow drying and after to finish the look,” says Potin, “so take time to learn how to style your bob.”

Rate your readiness for change

Potin says: “Before a big change going into a bob, my consultation question would be: ‘On scale from one to 10 how much are you ready to change?’ If the client says eight or nine, I know they’re ready to go for a big cut. But if they say five, it’s probably time for a trim with a little variation to make it feel different.”

What to do if you regret your bob

“If someone regrets cutting their hair into a bob, it’s probably because the consultation was not done the way it should have been,” says Potin. “But sometimes, it could just be that not enough layers or graduation were added to the cut, and that can be rectified by their stylist.

“Products + techniques = results. Find the right products for your hair texture and your new bob. Learn how to use the products with the correct techniques. This will then help give you the results you are after.”
