Vitamin C is a hugely popular skincare ingredient thanks to its antioxidant properties, which brighten the skin, treat hyperpigmentation and protect against free radicals and environmental stressors like pollution.

But did you know that vitamin C, AKA ascorbic acid, can do great detoxifying things for your hair and scalp too?

What exactly is vitamin C and what can it do to benefit hair?

Anabel Kingsley, brand president and consultant trichologist at Philip Kingsley, tells Stylist: “Vitamin C, scientifically known as ascorbic acid, is a six-carbon lactone molecule with the chemical formula C6H8O6. Ascorbic acid is freely soluble in water, and forms a clear, colourless-to-slightly-yellow solution (although it is more stable in its powder form). Its acidity helps to dissolve product, mineral and pollution build-up and impurities both on and below the hair’s cuticle, instantly leaving hair feeling weightless, softer and smoother, restoring natural radiance and shine.”

Is vitamin C good for any particular hair complaints?

“Vitamin C is good for the scalp due to its antioxidant properties, which protect against free-radical damage,” says Kingsley.

How long should it take before you see results?

“You will see instant results. Hair will be instantly softer and shinier from the very first use. It also improves the effectiveness of your deep-conditioning or bond-building treatment masks, as build-up will have been removed so the product can better penetrate the hair shaft.”
