In need of haircut inspiration? If you’re after a sharp, structured cut – the square bob is the style to ask your hairdresser for…
From the Italian bob to the clavicut, bob hairstyles have been dominating our social feeds for the past few years. But if you’re after something a little more timeless – there’s one haircut that should be on your radar: the square bob.
Characterised by its sharp, blunt edges and structured silhouette, the square bob is all about strong lines and precise angles, making it the perfect cut for anyone who wants to exude confidence. Less about layers and more about bold, clean edges, this is a bob that means business. Whether you wear it ultra-sleek or with a slightly tousled texture, the square bob is the no-fuss cut that won’t go out of style.
What is the square bob?
The square bob is a sharp, geometric take on the classic bob, defined by strong, straight edges and minimal layering. Similar to the power and box bob, the square bob is all about precision. Unlike the more relaxed, feathered bobs, it is characterised by straight lines, giving it a confident, high-fashion edge.
“Unlike the traditional bob, a square bob is characterised by sharp, blunt lines that create a boxy, angular silhouette,” explains Elliot Bute, stylist at Hershesons, Fitzrovia. “This bob looks great at chin or jaw length, with a thick, structured finish.”
Because of its clean, structured shape, the square bob works particularly well on straight and wavy hair types, but it can also be tailored for those with natural curls by keeping the length just below the jawline to allow for bounce and movement. What’s great about this cut is that it’s so simple – it has a sleek, minimalist finish that makes it look effortlessly chic.
Who does a square bob suit?
This strong shape adds a modern edge to the classic bob, and it suits almost everyone. “The sharp angles of the cut enhance cheekbones and define the jawline,” says Bute. “It’s incredibly versatile and can be tailored to suit different face shapes and hair textures.”
- For oval and heart-shaped faces, the sharp angles of the cut enhance cheekbones and define the jawline.
- For a rounder face, a slightly longer version of the square bob can help elongate the face and add definition.
“The square bob also works beautifully with thick hair, as the bluntness of the cut enhances volume and structure. You can also reduce some of the thickness by putting in minimal invisible layers. Fine hair also works well if cut precisely, adding the illusion of thickness and weight,” adds Bute.
What to ask your hairdresser for?
If you’re ready to embrace the square bob, make sure you communicate exactly what you want to your hairdresser. Ask for a blunt, structured bob that sits around the jawline or slightly longer if you want a bit more versatility. Emphasise that you want clean, sharp lines rather than soft layers – the key is in the precision.
“If you prefer a softer look, ask for a slightly textured ends to prevent it from appearing too heavy. Bring reference photos to show the exact shape and finish you’re after,” says Bute.
Your stylist may use a combination of scissors and clippers to achieve that ultra-sharp edge, so don’t be alarmed if they pull out the razor to refine the ends. To maintain the sleek, geometric look, regular trims (every six to eight weeks) are essential. Styling-wise, a straightener and a good heat protectant will be your best friends for keeping the lines crisp, while a lightweight serum or styling cream can help achieve a polished, glass-like finish.
