The bob is back for with a chic alternative – the short blunt bob. Here’s a host of inspiration for how to style this effortless look.
Some hairstyles we can all get behind, and the blunt bob and her super-chic baby sister, the short blunt bob, are really calling our name for 2024.
Offering more definition than a traditional blunt bob, but without losing that hard edge in a nape bob or a textured French bob, it’s a short, sweet alternative that’ll never go out of style.
Reminiscent of a scandi bob, the short blunt bob is appealing for its hard lines that frame the face to showcase a strong neckline with that one-length finish.
Seen on the likes of Dua Lipa, Lily Allen and Greta Lee, this versatile hairstyle can be dressed up or down for any occasion.
Celebrity hair stylist Katie Allan, founder of Mayfive Hair, is on-hand to tell us how to perfect this chic look and, most importantly, style it at home after that all-important salon appointment.
What is a short blunt bob?
As the name suggests, this look requires a bigger chop at the salon.
“A short blunt bob is a haircut that swings anywhere from an inch above the shoulders with a heavy straight baseline,” Allan says. “The short blunt bob is a chic style that often makes the hair appear fuller and healthier.”
Anyone with thin hair would benefit from this hairstyle, as it gives the illusion of thickness, while layers can often cut into the existing texture and thickness of the hair to make it seem thinner.
The short blunt bob is versatile enough to suit every face shape, though Allan says: “If you have a square jawline, you may want to consider softening the edges through the front and wear it more voluminous than straight.”
How do you style a short blunt bob?
Styling a short blunt bob depends on your desired finish. “To style a short blunt bob, use a paddle brush if you want sleekness or a soft round brush if you want more volume,” Allan says.
It’s another haircut that can also be left to dry naturally, as the definitive edge allows the natural texture of your hair – wavy, curly or straight – to shine through and still look chic.
When you’re next at the salon for a stylish short blunt bob, Allan says to ask for “a square baseline with no layers – a square shape is ideal for this look and your hair may need softening on the ends if it’s thick.”
The best practice is to take some photo inspiration to your hairdresser to show them the exact short blunt bob that you’d like to recreate on your hair. We’ve scoured the internet to select some of the best snaps of this hairstyle for your appointment.
