In case you needed another reason to get in on this popular hairstyle, the ‘round bob’ is chic, easy to maintain and perfect for every occasion. Here’s how to style the much-loved look, according to an expert stylist.

Our go-to haircut this year has been the bob in all of its forms, be it the texturised bob, sleek bob, French bob, blunt bob, banged bob or Birkin bob. But if you’re a fan of voluminous, fuller cuts then you might enjoy the round bob.

In contrast to the blunt bob or the straight bob, this 80s-inspired look leans into the soft, round shape of the bob that is full of body and bounce. It elevates the hair’s natural texture and movement, which is why it’s an ideal style for curly, wavy or textured hair.

Jason Collier, hairstylist and leader at Jerome Russell Bblonde, explains: “A round bob is a short cut, with a shape that curves inwards toward the face. It’s often one length all the way around, teamed with soft, rounded edges that create volume and a smooth, chic finish.

“To create a round bob, hair is trimmed to follow the natural shape of the head, typically falling just above the shoulders or sometimes slightly shorter.

“This style frames the face beautifully. It’s popular as it adds fullness and dimension to hair; it’s incredibly sleek, modern, chic and easy to maintain. It’s also very versatile and looks polished straight or with more texture.”

How to style a round bob

As with all bobs, there is a level of maintenance when it comes to styling, which includes using the right products to achieve your desired effect.

“Start by washing and towel-drying your hair as usual before applying a heat protectant,” Collier says. “Add a volumising or thickening mousse (Collier recommends Jerome Russell Bstyled Thickening Mousse, £6.99) or a lightweight styling balm to add texture and lift.

“Blow-dry your hair using a round brush, directing the ends inward to enhance the bob’s signature curved shape.”

If you’d prefer a smooth finish, use hair straighteners to add a soft wave or curl to the ends of your bob. In need of extra volume? Collier suggests using a root-boosting product on the crown of your head. Finish with texturising spray for extra movement.

When it comes to your next salon appointment, Collier says: “Be specific about the length and shape you want, and make sure to take reference pictures so you can discuss your goal.

“Ask for a round bob that frames your face, and explain that you’d like a soft, curved shape. Be mindful to ask for a style that creates volume and has ends tucked slightly inwards to create a rounded finish. If you’re open to layers or a fringe, mention that too.”
