Rose brunette: the subtle 2024 hair colour trend that still makes a big statement

Tempted by the red hair colour trends we’ve been seeing everywhere lately but not sure you want to go that bold? Rose brunette could be just what you’re looking for.

We’ve been swooning over Dua Lipa’s deep, dark red hair ever since she dyed it, and ‘cherry cola’ hair has been a hot topic ever since.

It’s a bold, stunning look, but what if you want to get in on the trend in a way that’s a bit more… subtle?

Enter: rose brunette, a deep reddish brown that’s a bit like the brunette’s answer to strawberry blonde.

Nicola Clarke, creative colour director at Nicola Clarke x John Frieda Salons, is a big fan of the shade and predicts it’s going to be massive this year.

She tells Stylist: “This is a more wearable and flattering way to incorporate red on a brunette that doesn’t want to take the bold step of going bright red.”

Jason Crozier, art director at Neville Hair And Beauty, says: “In embracing rose brunette, clients are not just adopting a trend, they’re making a statement about their willingness to experiment with colour in a way that enhances their natural beauty and adds a playful yet sophisticated twist to their appearance. It’s a colour choice that reflects a desire for subtlety with a touch of the unexpected – perfect for those looking to update their look with something special.”

Why is rose brunette so hot right now?

“What makes rose brunette so alluring is its perfect balance of warmth and subtlety,” Crozier explains. “It combines the rich depth of brunette with soft, blush pink highlights. This versatility is precisely why it’s capturing hearts: it’s a fresh, low-commitment way to add a splash of colour and resonates with those seeking a subtle departure from the norm without overwhelming their natural hue.”

Who might the trend suit best?

Crozier says: “This trend is exceptionally flattering for a wide range of skin tones. Its warm undertones can brighten the complexion, making it a fantastic choice for individuals with medium to dark brunette hair looking to refresh their look while maintaining a natural depth. That said, rose brunette can be tailored to suit lighter brunettes as well, with the right adjustment in the pink hues to complement their base colour and skin tone.”

“Brunettes naturally tend to fade and by mixing a combination of reds with a small amount of copper [into the formula],” Clarke explains. “It gives you a flattering red that suits most skin types, especially brunettes. Most brunettes, when colouring their hair, touch up the roots and then take the same formula through to the end to make it richer or darker after it fades, but rather than doing this, a rich glossy rose red can be used instead, making it possible for you to play with your colour and go beyond the trend.”

What should you ask for at the salon to get the look?

“For readers eager to embrace this trend,” says Crozier, “communication is key when visiting the salon. I recommend asking for a consultation to discuss incorporating ‘rose’ or ‘blush’ highlights into your brunette base. Specify that you’re looking for a seamless blend that adds warmth and dimension without overpowering your natural colour. It’s also helpful to show your colourist pictures of the rose brunette style you’re aiming for. This ensures you both have a clear vision of the desired outcome, allowing for a personalised approach that best suits your individual look.”

As for Clarke, she agrees it’s always a good idea to bring reference photos to show your stylist exactly what you’re after.
