Bob hair cuts are back and better than ever. Inspired to chop off your locks? Here’s how to achieve the sultry nape bob look…
Summer’s hottest hair trend just got sleeker with the resurgence of the ultra-chic nape bob. There’s no doubting the popularity of this versatile hairstyle – we’ve been admiring the 90s bob, bell-bottom bob and feathered bob this week – and now we have a short, sharp take on the classic look.
If you’re keen on a significant chop, then the ‘nape bob’ might be for you. The hair is cut above chin-length so when you lean forward, the nape of your neck is revealed. It’s chic, sexy and perfect for showcasing a sultry neckline this summer.
With a sleek angular finish, it’s perfect for accentuating the cheekbones and jawline. Founder of Stā Studios Samantha Cusick explains that the nape bob can also be spruced up with a textured, voluminous finish for an easy, low-maintenance summer hairstyle.
“The nape bob differs from other bob styles primarily in its length and its emphasis on the nape area,” she says. “While traditional bobs can range from chin-length to shoulder-length, the nape bob specifically sits at the nape, creating a more defined and structured appearance.
“This style suits a variety of face shapes. It’s especially flattering on oval, heart and square faces, as it helps to elongate the neck and can soften strong jawlines. However, your hairstylist can customise the nape bob by adding layers or altering the length slightly, adapting it to complement almost any face shape.”
How to style a nape bob
There’s a few different ways to achieve this look. It’s a twist on the French bob and a sister to the blunt bob, but offers more texture, clean lines and a striking finish.
“It can be either cut blunt if you like a more edgy look or you can add soft layers for more of a French girl chic look,” Cusick says. “For bounce and movement, start with a heat protectant and add in some amplify mousse. Blow-dry your hair using a round brush, rolling the ends under to achieve a smooth, bouncy finish.”
For some extra volume, add some drama with a fringe. Otherwise, opt for an undercut or rise in the angle at the back to expose even more of the nape of your neck.
Throw in some tousled, textured waves for a more relaxed look or Cusick suggests adding some drops of oil to the ends of your hair for a “high-shine finish to keep your hair looking healthy and vibrant”.
With so many different variations on this one style, it’s always helpful to take some inspirational pictures to your hairdresser.
Cusick says: “Choose between a blunt cut for a more dramatic, edgy look or add subtle layers for a softer, more blended finish.
“To maintain your nape bob, regular trims every six to eight weeks are essential to keep the shape looking sharp and fresh. Additionally, incorporating weekly hair treatments can help maintain the health and strength of your hair, ensuring your nape bob always looks its best.”
