In need of some cool-girl hair inspiration? Look no further than the chic mid-length shag cut…
If you’re looking to reinvent your hair in 2024, it might be time to embrace the nostalgic chic of the mid-length shag.
This imperfect style leans into the low-maintenance mood we love to sport over the summer. Think choppy layers, wispy framing pieces around the face and possibly a statement fringe. Whether you’re in your cowgirl curtains era or loving the 70s vibe, it’s a cut that can be tailored to suit everyone’s style.
Lulu Richards, hairstylist and mullet expert at Stā Studios in London, is a firm fan of the mid-length shag. “It’s grungy and messy and very versatile,” she says. While the cut “is very 70s, inspired by legends like David Bowie and Prince”, Richards notes that it can be shaped and styled to offer “more ‘2000s Tumblr’ vibes like Alexa Chung, or [a] more rock and roll [feel] like Miley Cyrus.”
The mid-length shag also suits both thin and thick hair, as the cut creates texture and movement. “Loads of short layers are perfect for someone with thin hair to give height and shape,” Richards explains. “Someone with thick hair can get this cut with weight removed to make it wispier and more lightweight.”
How to style a mid-length shag cut
One of the main benefits of the mid-length shag? It requires very little styling, as most of the shape is created in the distinctive cut.
Richards says it’s perfect for a “wash-and-go kind of person” who prefers to avoid heat on their hair and save time in the mornings. “Simply finish with Kevin Murphy Bedroom.Hair texturising spray, £29, to give hold for when it’s dry,” she recommends. (Richards is an ambassador for Murphy’s professional products.)
But while this is a minimal-effort look – the messier it appears, the better – it’s crucial to be open with your hairdresser about the level of maintenance you’re willing to offer your cut.
“Let your stylist know what your realistic styling routine is,” Richards says. “Even if it’s a wash once a week and no drying, it’ll give them an idea on how to make the cut work for you every day.”
Ahead of seeing your hairdresser, it’s also worth collating some images of the specific mid-length shag cut you’d like to recreate. “Pinterest should be your best friend before any salon appointment,” Richards says.
With so many ways to style this shabby chic look, here’s some photo inspiration to get you started.
