If you’re among those thinking of braving the chop and your hair is on the thinner side, the micro bob could be the one for you.
It’s 2024 and bobs are reigning supreme in the hair trend world. If you, like so many of us, are wondering which of the many bob varieties out there to choose from on your next trip to the salon, then you might want to give the micro bob a look.
This short crop is a perfect blend of edgy and elegant, thanks to its super-short, jawline-grazing length. Whether you want to be blunt with it or incorporate some softer feathering, there’s lots of fun to be had.
And to anyone out there with fine hair, this cut will be particularly well-suited to your needs…
What exactly is the micro bob?
Michele Antiga, a signature stylist with salon Gielly Green, tells Stylist: “A micro bob is a very short bob that sits at your hairline in the back and above the jawline at the front. It can be a one-length blunt bob, or a more French version with layers.
“This type of bob is beautiful in many finishes, from sleek to more natural undone waves or slight curls. But be mindful that at this short length, it could make the tighter curls go outward and up, resulting in more of a ball shape.”
What hair type would a micro bob suit best?
A short bob can make your hair look thicker because, for most people, hair is thicker at the roots than it is at the ends, where things can get a bit wispier.
Antiga says: “This is a style perfect for finer to medium hair. But your hairstylist should be able to adjust cutting graduations with texturising finishes to best suit your hair type.”
How to style a micro bob
“It’s all about sleek lines, effortless elegance, and a dash of attitude,” says Gielly Green’s artistic director Ondine Cowley. “One of the most exciting aspects of the micro bob is its versatility across various hair textures. Whether you have straight, curly or coily locks, there are a number of styling options to explore.
“For those with straight hair, embrace the sleek and polished vibe with a round bristle brush and blow dry, or opt for textured waves for a playful twist. Curly-haired individuals can enhance their natural curls with the right products, defining each ringlet for a bold and voluminous look. Wavy-haired beauties can effortlessly achieve beachy waves, adding an element of casual chic to their micro bob.”
What to ask your stylist for
Cowley explains: “When it comes to getting the perfect micro bob tailored to your hair texture, communication with your stylist is key. Before your appointment, gather some inspirational photos that resonate with your desired look. During your consultation, discuss your hair texture and desired outcome openly.
“For those with straight hair, ask your stylist for precise, blunt cuts with a slight graduation at the back to maintain sleekness. Curly-haired individuals may benefit from layers to enhance bounce and movement. Wavy-haired people can opt for subtle layering to add dimension and texture. And for coily hair, consider a slightly longer length to accommodate shrinkage and embrace your natural curl pattern. In conclusion, the micro bob isn’t just a haircut – it’s a statement. With its timeless appeal and endless styling possibilities, it’s a must-have!”
